I got them WMD's, I got them YellowTOPS, BIN LADEN, we got that BIN LADEN. These are some of the terms that you will hear while watching the Wire and now a days what you will hear outside of the Rose Garden over the past few weeks. It don't take a genius to realize that Finley leaving the city really crippled the team a lot. So instead of going forward with an aging team that was tied up in long term contracts, the Blazers GM did what he does best... blow shit up Manhattan Project style.
The first to go was Arvydas Sabonis and he ended up landed in Chicago. When the Blazer fans reminsice over Sabonis it's filled with a bunch of what ifs. What if he would have came over earlier in his career, the Blazers could have dominated the league with a Sabonis that was entering his prime. The Blazer fans remember all of the great moments that Sabonis provided, especially stepping up in the playoffs when all the great Blazer teams faulted. Sabonis greatest season would be 16/10/3 and his playoff averaged ended up being 12/7/2, the numbers went down each playoffs. Sabonis ended up being traded for Gary Trent, Rusty LaRue and cash considerations. Sabonis is currently enjoying a 20/12/3 season for the Bulls.
The second to go was Marcus Camby. When fans watched Camby for half a year, they say a defensive monster in the making. Last year Camby ended up making the all defensive team and became a free agent. When Camby resigned the fans were happy because they thought he was coming back with Finley, meaning the Blazers would contend for the title. However the latter never happened as Finley bolted the country thus leaving Camby an overpaid big man. No one will question what Camby brings to a team, defense, rebounding and shotblocking however you add that up and that's not worth a max contract. Camby is currently averaging 9/11/2/2 season for the Nets. In the deal the Blazers received Jayson Williams, Scott Burrell and a future pick. Only the pick remains as an asset for the Blazers.
The next to go for the Blazers was Eddie Robinson, who personified the JailBlazers team. Eddie Robinson was blessed with amazing athleticism and a basketball body, however God was evidently slacking that day as he forgot to give him a brain. The Mavs wanted a swingmen off the bench and currently Robinson is doing that perfectly. The Blazers got back Chris Dudley, Tariq Abdul-Wahad and cash considerations. TAW was one of the forgotten players in this deal because he is a good player, but just constantly injured.
The next to go was Rasho who was disappointing to many fans. A lot of fans really thought we were getting that Sabonis who was young and would grow to a player. However those fans let blind homerism run rampant because Rasho had sucked and continued to suck. The Blazers gave up a future second for Rasho and ended up moving him for a future second. Let the cycle continue.
The next to go was a fan favorite and a GM favorite, Terrell Brandon. Brandon was one of the most electrifying point guards when the Blazers got him and he played at a high level for two years. This year Brandon got off to a quick start, albeit sidelined for five days. His age is getting up to him, but he can still bring it to any of the new school point guards. Brandon's contract is loaded with a few more years so the Blazers moved him in exchange for the man with one or possibly no kidneys and Eric Washington. To help move Brandon the Blazers paid some of his salary because it is a lot. The fans of Portland will always cherish Brandon because of the way he played the game, hard and smart. Brandon would always be welcomed back to Portland.
The next to go was the newly acquired Sean Elliot because he had to go. He had another year on his contract and that's not going to fly for someone who simply isn't good. The Blazers ended up getting George Lynch and Matt Geiger, AKA those two puppets that Iverson had on his string. However more importantly the Blazers again paid part of the salary to help ease the move because of the additional three million remaining on Elliot's salary.
On to the next one, Jayson Williams was moved for Vitaly Potapenko and Vinny Del Negro and cash considerations. After years of being dubbed the Jail Blazers, owner Paul Allen has sent down a memo to clean up the image. Thus Jayson Williams had to go because he is a knuckle head off the court, in limousines and generally in court. Vitaly and Vinny won't be big contributors at all this year for the Blazers and I would be shocked if they finished the year with the team.
The final deal was Kenny Anderson and 1500 bucks for Walt Williams. The team simply saw this as savings because Anderson has an additional five million dollars next year and were going to buy out his contract for 2500 bucks. That's a saving of a 1000 bucks and for a team that is looking to start a new that means a lot. Walt Williams thus far has been shooting the ball horribly, if your MO is shooting you better shoot well or else your in risk of being cut.
