Usually going into free agency with cap space hoping to lure away free agents never works due to bird rights and that additional year that home teams can offer. Most of the time a team might be lucky to steal away one free agent and they have to overpay in order to assure that steal. However in what has to be one of the craziest free agents in perhaps of all time we see some big time names change teams and most changed countries.
Jason Kidd
New Team: Grizzlies
Old Team: Suns
One has to wonder about joint owners health after losing Tyreke Evans in one league and Jason Kidd in the other. Quite simply I can't even imagine it nor do I ever want to experience anything remotely close to it. Oh the Grizzlies, Kidd jumps the border and decides to run with a young team that he feels can win something. On the Grizz he will have young weapons in Hamilton, Marion, JO and SAR. He will send incumbent point guard Bibby to the bench aka the trading block to get another good player. One has to wonder why are players fleeing USA to Canada?
Alonzo Mourning
New Team: Pacers
Old Team: Heat
After winning a title with the Heat once might be able to understand that Mourning what's to bring his talents to another team and win a title... but the Pacers? Was it the duo of Johnson and Redd that made him salivate? One merely has to posture that Mourning wanted to take his payday and bolt to a bad team so he can lax for the rest of his career. Either way to steal Mourning from the former champs is quite the coup.
Michael Finley
New Team: Raptors
Old Team: Blazers
Michael Finley was being groomed to be the next Clyde Drexler of Portland, instead he bolted to Toronto. One has to wonder why bolt to Toronto and their young talent. On the Blazers he was the main go to guy and fit in well with Camby, Rose and Brandon. With the Raptors he might be the third or fourth option, so does that make him Alfred? Michael Finley might be a leader next year for them, but in the near future he will be an after thought once Dirk and Vince show truly arrive. Finley has an excellent inside/outside game that will fit perfect for them.
Shareef Abdur-Rahim
New Team: Grizzlies
Old Team: Mavericks
Evidently Shareef didn't like being traded away from the Grizzlies, so he vowed to returned... or maybe it was all just a scheme for the Grizz to get rich. On top of that Shareef even brought a friend by the name Jason along with him. SAR is coming off a 20/8/3 season for the Mavericks and now joins another powerful young team in Canada. JO, Marion, Hamilton, SAR, Kidd and Bibby is just sick when you think about it. Not to mention JO, Kidd, SAR, Marion and Hamilton all have at least three years to go together as they all have long and cheap contracts.
Erick Dampier
New Team: Raptors
Old Team: Warriors
This wasn't even a case of overspending in order to get Dampier to jump ship to join the Raptors. Perhaps that Raptors had a sales pitch that no other team can possibly offer. After stealing Michael Finley the Raptors now boosted a team that featured Damon Stoudamire, Vince Carter, Dirk Nowitzki to go along with the new additions. On paper the Raptors now boost one of the most youthful and powerful teams. Dampier will have to do the dirty work on this team and that is his forte. Dampier is coming off a season in which he averaged 15/9. On the Raptors we expect those numbers to do a switch because scoring won't be needed here.
Marcus Camby
New Team: Team Diddy
Old Team: Blazers
When the Blazers offered the max contract offer to Camby, they were clearly not looking at his stats. What they were looking at were teams have a lot of cap space and felt they had to overpay to bring back their two star players. After Finley bolted to Toronto, there was no time to take back their offer and Camby quickly accepted. Camby now joins the ranks of having one of the worst contract in terms of production. Camby is steal a great defender, but is vastly over payed. Camby rejoins a team that features Rose, Brandon and Sabonis and will need a miracle for Eddie Robinson to realize his potential. In other words, Blazers need a SF.
Seriously... Fuck Canada... Except Montreal because that place is great.
