The Minnesota Timberwolves are negotiating with Andrei Kirilenko, who was selected #2 overall last year in the 1999 SSBL Draft. The 19 yr old Russian forward is still under contract with CSKA Moskow for one more year until 2001, but the terms of a buyout are being negotiated. In the 1999-2000 season, Kirilenko helped his team win the inaugural championship of the Northern European Basketball League and its second Russian Superleague championship in a row. On April 23, 2000, he participated in his second Russian All-Star game, helping the West beat the East 122-111. Despite being the odds-on favorite to win the slam dunk contest, he finished second to Harold Dean of Lokomotiv Mineralnye Vody. He is also scheduled to compete with the Russian National team in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Serbian point guard Igor Rakocevic is contract with KK Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) is up and the 20-year-old floor general fully intends to leave Europe and join the Utah Jazz who drafted him #14 overall last year in the 1999 SSBL Draft. He will also be joining the Yugoslavian National team in Sydney this summer.
Marko Jaric has accepted an offer to play with Virtus Bologna on a 2-year deal (with a buyout clause after the first year). He is keeping his name in the draft, however. A team who drafts Jaric would retain his rights until he comes to play in the USA. His contract will be in effect when he comes over to the USA (1 or 2 years).
Yakhouba Diawara, the French 18-yr old atheltic freak, has signed a 1 year contract with the French team JB Dijon. He has also decided to keep his name in the draft. He was also mulling over the decision to attend an American college and play at the collegiate level. A team who drafts Diawara would retain his rights until he comes to play in the USA. His contract will be in effect after 1 year.
