2004:
3. Emeka Okafor PF 6'10'' 255 22 B- D+ D+ A- B- B
16. Delonte West SG 6'4'' 185 21 C B C+ B D+ B
34. Vassilis Spanoulis SG 6'4'' 195 22 C+ B- C+ C+ C- B
To be honest, I was really hoping Smith would fall to me here. However after all was said and done, Okafor turned out to be a solid pick for the Knicks. He shared the frontcourt with Stoudamire and made a formidable duo. West proved to be a good mid round pick as he was a solid rotation player for most of his career. Okafor and West were later traded to the Spurs in return for McGrady which led the Knicks to their first ever playoff birth. Spanoulis was a great pick in the second round and I remember being very happy he fell to me. He had a great career, even averaging 20ppg if I remember correctly. However he got a ludacris contract which hindered his value. Spanoulis was dealt to rid myself of Hamilton's contract which at the time was considered untradeable. This turned out to be by far the most regrettable deal in the History of the Knicks franchise. I should've been ran out of town faster than Isiah.
Side Note:
Knicks Trade:
Vassilis Spanoulis
Richard Hamilton
future 1st - turned out to be Blake Griffin
Nuggets Trade:
Jalen Rose
Jannero Pargo
What Could Have Been:
3. Trevor Ariza
16. Brandon Bass, Lenny Cooke, Jamal Sampson, Ha Seung Jin
34. Beno Udrih, Sergei Karulov
2005:
1. Chris Paul PG 6'0'' 175 20 B- C+ B+ B+ C- A
21. Ronny Turiaf PF 6'10'' 250 22 C+ D+ D+ B+ C+ B
24. Mile Ilic (Overseas) C 7'1'' 235 21 C+ C- C B- B- B
34. Ndudi Ebi SF 6'9'' 195 21 C+ C C B C+ A
51. Olu Famutimi SG 6'5'' 207 21 C+ B C+ C C- B
The draft that I still am wondering how the hell it went wrong. Paul was widely considered to be the 1st overall pick, however some people said they would've went with Williams. Paul had a good rookie year but never developed into the superstar that I had thought he would become. Williams and Granger went on to be perennial all stars. I remember in the draft thread a lot of people saying that Turiaf was a steal. However Turiaf never really turned out to be anything more than a decent backup. Illic, Ebi and Famutimi never amounted to anything.
What Could Have Been:
1. Deron Williams, Danny Granger
21/24. Kelenna Azubuike,
34. Linas Kleiza, Martynas, Erazem Lorbek, Will Bynum, Cenk Akoyl, basically anyone
51. No one really noteworthy
2006:
3. 1st rounder traded by previous GM to miami (Al Jefferson)
40. Guillermo Diaz PG 6'2'' 185 21 C+ C+ B- C+ C-
Diaz was a stab in the dark that I stashed in the D-League but never improved. Flamed out of the league rather quickly.
What Could Have Been:
40. Daniel Gibson, Adam Morrison
2007.
7.(Via Chris Paul Trade) Tiago Splitter C 7'0'' 272 21 C+ C- C- B B- A
20. Traded (Brandan Wright)
39. Traded (Josh McRoberts)
At the time I really needed a pg, so I was hoping and praying that Conley Jr. would fall to me. However he didn't so I went with Splitter which was widely criticized. Many felt Hawes was the better pick who went the pick after. During an off-season deal Horford (#3) and Hawes(#8) were acquired. Splitter turned out to be a solid backup and did a good job starting when Horford/Bargnani got hurt. Looking back, I have no qualms about this pick. He hasn't turned out to be the best pick, but really wasn't that great of a draft.
What Could Have Been:
7. Aaron Brooks, Al Thornton, Brad Newley
2008.
1. Traded as mentioned above, damn future 1sts (Blake Griffin)
16. Brandon Rush SG 6'7'' 211 23 C+ B C C+ C- B
22. Marreese Speights PF 6'10'' 245 21 B C- D C C+ B
42. Luc Richard Mbah A Moute SF 6'7'' 224 22 B- C- C B- C B
Rush turned out to be a bum, he always played well in preseason. However when shit mattered, he would sit on the bench doing fuck all. Speights turned out to be a steal where he was drafted. Had some good years after he got out from under Horford, Splitter and Hawes. LRMAM had promise but never amounted to anything. Another one that always had good preseasons, but couldn't do anything to crack the lineup.
What Could Have Been:
16. Chase Budinger
22. Darrel Arthur
42. No one really
2009.
13. Traded (Terrence Williams)
41. Traded (Ahmad Nivins)
This definitely wasn't the best draft. Looking back I don't mind giving up my picks, as it was mostly full with career bench players.
2010.
13. Paul George SG 6'9'' 215 20 C+ B- C- B- C A
16. Ed Davis PF 6'9'' 215 21 C+ D+ D B C+ A
46. Armon Johnson PG 6'3'' 195 21 C+ C+ B- C+ D B
I was very happy with this draft after, and am still very happy with it now. Davis has turned out to be a solid bigman. George was solid before I went spastic and remodeled the roster. Johnson was a stab in the dark and didn't pan out. Looking back, there's not much else I could've done.
What Could Have Been:
13. Maybe Donte Greene
16. Probably no one
46. No one really stands out
2011.
11. Jan Vesely SF 6'11'' 240 21 B- C+ D+ B- C+ A
29. Isaiah Thomas PG 5'8'' 180 22 C+ B B C+ D B
38. Davis Bertans (Overseas) SF 6'10'' 210 19 C B+ C+ C C A
As with the 2010 draft I was happy after, and am happy now with it. Vesley was package with Davis to obtain Bargnani who helped the Knicks make their 2nd appearance in the playoffs. Thomas has been rock solid as a backup guard off the bench. He even did a stand up job starting the point, however Curry has taken that role and ran with it. I remember back at the draft thinking how deadly a back court of Fredette and Curry would be with an outside focus. Their defense would be terrible but they would be able to outgun anyone. I really thought he'd be there at 29. Bertans looks much improved after his D-League stint, one more year down there he could amount to something. It came down to Thompson and Bertans, in the end I made the wrong selection here.
What Coule Have Been:
11. Josh Selby, Jimmer Fredette, Charles Jenkins
29. Markeif Morris, Marshon Brooks
38. Klay Thompson, Scotty Hopson
2012.
3. Harrison Barnes SF 6'8'' 210 20 B- B C B C+ A
35. Kris Joseph SF 6'7'' 207 24 C+ B C B C B
Too early to tell, however I really like Barnes. Joseph was taken because he's canadian and I wanted a guy who likes to booze. So I'm sure Joseph been getting bombed regularly since he hasn't touched the floor for more than 10 minutes in a game
Overall:
My early days as Gm were rough evaluating talent. However it looks as though I've learned from it as my drafts have gotten better. I was trade happy in the beginning which lead to a lot of draft picks being dealt and it didn't turn out well.
Best Draft Pick: Vassilis Spanoulis, steal in the 2nd round
Worst Draft Pick: Chris Paul, could've had Deron Williams or Danny Granger. Both cornerstones for their franchises.
What Could Have Been:
PG: Deron Williams / Aaron Brooks / Beno Udrih
SG: Jimmer Fredette / Kelenna Azubuike / Klay Thompson
SF: Trevor Ariza / Chase Budinger / Adam Morrison
PF: Blake Griffin / Al Jefferson
C: Martynas Andriuskevicius / Ha Seung Jin
Son of a Bitch that's a good team!
