Stole this from Brian, cuz it's something you should be aware of: If you had a player on your team last season, you can also always offer up to 120% of their last year's salary regardless of birds. So if you had an MLE last year and you wanna try and bring him back, take that $4.5 million he made last season, multiply it by 1.2 and poof, you have your number ($5.4 million). This is an especially important guideline for teams that have players coming off BIG contracts as well. For example, my situation with Amare Stoudemire. Teams with cap space can offer a player of his experience $15.9 million. He made $16,378,325 on my team in 2009. I can offer up to 120% of that in the first season of the new deal. So you take that number, multiply it by 1.2 and there you go, I have $19,653,990 to offer in the first season. Guys with players like LeBron, Wade, etc., it'd be important for you guys to understand how this works.
