Although it is early in the season, the 2010-2011 is underway. the top spots for the east and west are wide open and all teams in the top 8 in each conference will be battling till the end of the season to gain the top seed. The season is still very very young but if the season ended right now the following players would get these awards in my opinion.
Rookie of the Year- Brandon Jennings
This kid is a beast already and is in only in his rookie year. averaging 17 points on a squad that is full of scorers. Jennings can take it to the hoop with the best of them and can torch you from 3 averaging 42% beyond the arc. Jennings is not only a scorer however. He works hard to make it a team game, leading the Rockets to a 10-3 start. Jennings loves to get his teammates involved averaging 9 assists per game. This young lad will be an up and coming star of the league some day and and right now is my pick for ROY.
Defensive Player of the Year- Erick Dampier
Man's a beast. No other words can describe him. Him and his bald head and funky headband have really led the way for the Celtics to a 9-3 start. At an old age of 35 years old, some would think that Damp would get worse and not play as well this year then last. Obviously Dampier is playing above anyone's expectations. Dampier inhales rebounds like Charles Barkley eats Krispy Kremes. He is averaging a monster 12.2 boards per game. He Blocks with the best of them as well averaging 4th best 2.8 a game. What people don't know is that Dampier is a sly cat, poking balls loose and averaging 1.7 steals per game as well. It'll be hard to drive down the lane with this guy around and if you do you'll absolutely see the ball in the 2nd or 3rd row in the stands. Erick " The Beast " Dampier is my vote for Defensive player of the year.
6th man of the Year - Jamal Crawford
Maybe I'm being a little biased because he's on my team but you can't argue with results with him. Jamal is averaging 14 points, 3 boards, and 4 assists in only 27 minutes. Craw is efficient, shooting 50% from the field and 45% from down town. He would start for most teams in the league but has accepted a lesser role as the 6th man for the Charlotte Bobcats and has been a huge part to that organization. Often times is the 2nd or 3rd leading scorer on the team, providing a huge boost off the bench if Monta, Marbury and Iggy mostly are getting the job done. You can rely on Craw to be instant offense off the bench and completely shake you with one of his killer crossover self alley-oop passes. He's just a baller ladies and gentlemen and is my pick for 6th man of the Year
Most Valuable Player- Joe Johnson
Hands down is the best player in the league right now. There's really nothing Johnson can't do. Scores with the best of them, passes with the best of them, even rebounds with the best of them. Joe John is just an animal when it comes to the game of basketball. Joe is 1st in the league in scoring with 33 points per game, getting 3 more points per than Ray Allen's 30 a game which is also insane. Shooting 53% from the field and a lights out 49% from three point range, how the hell do you cover this guy? he can take you in and out, drive past you and make you gargle his nuts when he dunks over you. Johnson does all the intangibles as well. While averaging 33 points per game, Joe Johnson is the farthest thing from a ball hog. Johnson leads the league in assists with a healthy 12.3 assists per game. He averages 7 boards a game and is crafty with his hands in a non sexual way averaging 2.7 steals per game. Just an outstanding player, Joe Johnson gets my vote for MVP so far.
And those are my award picks. I know the season is still young but these guys will definitly be in the consideration for each respective award.
