Another report just came through the presses this afternoon, following a series of games played in the 1st Round of Regional matchups in Portland, Oregon. Again, the stands were crowded with scouts from across the world to see a handful of exciting and promising young players including Tyler Hansbrough, Donte Greene and Austin Daye. SSBL was represented well also, with the majority of current lottery bound teams in attendance.
Notable Teams Participating: Syracuse (3 Seed), LSU (8 Seed), Gonzaga (4 Seed), Arizona State (6 Seed), North Carolina (1 Seed), USC (2 Seed)
Notable Players Scouted:
Syracuse: Donte Greene, Jonny Flynn, Paul Harris
LSU: Marcus Thornton
Gonzaga: Austin Daye
Arizona State: James Harden
UNC: Wayne Ellington, Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson
USC: DeMar DeRozan, Taj Gibson
Player Reports:
Donte Greene C+ B C B- C+ -- Donte Greene may be one of the brightest college stars in the tournament right now, with a unique skill set that draws comparisons to Danny Granger. Greene stands a staggering 6'10" and towers over his defender. Showing great ability shooting the ball, able to curl off screens, or pull up in transition.
Jonny Flynn B- C B- C+ D+ -- Greene's teammate has also impressed many scouts with his inept ability to get to the hole. What he decides to do after driving is another great skill of his - he can dish it out to the open man, or just as easily score on the layup. Flynn is an incredible athlete and moves at the speed of light.
Paul Harris C+ C+ C+ C+ C -- Rounding out the freshmen is the "do-it-all" Paul Harris. Despite being listed at 6'4", Harris plays like a Power Forward and has the strength and athleticism to do so. While he isn't a great scorer, Harris is a glue guy that will do whatever it takes to get a win. Many scouts are questioning Harris due to some trouble off the court involving his child's mother and an incident involving crack cocaine - this may hurt his stock tremendously. (Flynn, Harris and I played ball together at the Y in Niagara Falls, NY - Harris' ankle injury was bugging him all the way back in HS)
Marcus Thornton B- B C C C- -- Thornton is the definition of a scorer. He combines speed and strength to put the ball in the hole from anywhere on the court. Thornton has all the tools necessary to be an offensive powerhouse. His defense on the other hand, needs a lot of work.
Austin Daye C+ C+ C- B- C+ -- Athletic Freak. His long arms make him effective in many facets of the game, despite his frail figure (6'10" 190lbs) His jumper is smooth and with his long arms (very high release point) his shot is rarely blocked. Excellent timing on the defensive end, allowing him to gather up steals and blocks in a hurry. He needs to focus on the fundamentals however, along with staying in front of his man. Needs to get A LOT stronger if he wants to be a force in the league.
James Harden C+ B C B- C- -- Your run of the mill SG - a jumpshot, adequate ball handling skills, ability to play defense in the right system and an ability to get to the hole from time to time. He's athletic, quick and has a good sense of where to be at all times. A guy like this doesn't make it past the lottery.
Wayne Ellington C B+ C C C- -- Blistering shooting ability and can score from anywhere on the perimeter. Unfortunately, he's not strong enough to be effective getting to the basket and finishing. Not a great athlete - thrives on being set up by his All-NCAA PG Ty Lawson and his oft-double teamed post mate Tyler "Psycho-T" Hansbrough. However, Ellington is a pure shooter and nothing short of it.
Ty Lawson C B B+ B- D -- Excellent PG. Ball handling ability is through the roof and he is great without the ball in his hands moving through screens and cuts to the basket. Lawson has pro-range and is not afraid to take the shot. Has shown a good sense for getting to the basket and finishing strong. Ty has all the tools to succeed at the next level.
Tyler Hansbrough B- C C- B- C+ -- Psycho-T! Hansbrough is an atomic bomb's worth of energy stuffed into a 6'9" frame. At 24 years old, he's mature enough to lead his team to victory and also has the restraint to take criticism from the coach and learn a thing or two. Definitely a modest competitor and is very coachable. Modest however, doesn't mean he takes things lightly. He'll fight to the buzzer and give every ounce of energy he's got left. A cyclone around the basket - he'll grab offensive rebounds and put them back up before the defense reacts to the initial missed shot.
DeMar Derozan B C C B- C- -- Awesome athlete, possibly the best in the tournament. He'll fly to the basket with his incredible penetrating ability and finish with a ferocious slam dunk. Potential oozes from his pores in place of sweat and he learns from his mistakes better than anyone at USC. Needs to work on his passing skills and has no three point shot whatsoever - things that will hinder his playing time if he doesn't grasp them quickly. His athleticism gets him by on defense, but again, needs to work on fundamentals.
Taj Gibson B- D+ C- B- C+ -- Taj doesn't need to work on fundamentals on the other hand. He's a great low post scorer and plays great on defense. He's also a very underrated shot blocker. Has the potential to be a good glue guy off the bench, but if he works hard at his game, could become a solid starter. Average athlete that needs to get stronger to bang in the low post.
