Catching Up With Stephon Marbury
Nets point guard Stephon Marbury worked hard all season and earned his first All Star birth after averaging 24 PPG and 8 APG. Tonight, he was seen relaxing at Fenway Park at the Home Run Derby. Marbury sat down with Joe Buck and Tim McCarver during the first round of the Derby to talk about his offseason so far and what he sees in store for the Nets.
The reporters stormed Marbury as he walked into Fenway
Buck: And joining us now is basketball star Stephon Marbury from the New Jersey Nets. Thanks for joining us in the booth Steph.
Marbury: Thanks for having me guys. I always love getting in front of the camera.
McCarver: I didn’t know you were a baseball fan, who’s your team?
Marbury: Ya, I watch a little ball. I like keeping up with the other sports to see if there are any opportunities out there. There’s no team in the world that can’t benefit from having Starbury in their uniform. As far as my team, I’m from New York so I gotta go with the Yankees. (Boos storm in from the crowd)
Buck: What was the biggest difference playing in New Jersey this season?
Marbury: Well to be honest, it was different being the go-to guy. I may come off as a bit cocky, but it was hard being the guy who needed to score all the big buckets. The past two seasons, I was the third option behind Tom(Gugliotta) & KG, but this year always having the rock in my hands and getting all the attention was different, because I couldn’t just dump off to KG.
Marbury had a lot of pressure on him all year and the refs weren't helping
McCarver: This was a rough year for the Nets, is there anything that you point to specifically that could’ve made this season a bit different?
Marbury: Yea definitely, just look at Kendall’s injury. We were 8-3 in the games that he played start to finish. You take out any team’s second leading scorer and you really mess up the chemistry. The last 9 games when Gill came back was probably the most fun I’ve had on the court in a while, since we was clicking like we did in training camp.
Buck: What do you see in store for New Jersey heading into the offseason?
Marbury: I see a hungry team coming back to compete. I already talked to Kendall & Tim Thomas about coming back, and they just signed earlier today, so hopefully that’ll let us get acquainted better since we didn’t have that much time with the trades & the injury. I also can’t wait for the draft. Lots of guys that think they’re ready to take Steph’s crown. I’m talking about Francis & Davis, they better be prepared to be the 2nd & 3rd best point guards in the game if they’re entering the draft. Hopefully they do because that’ll help us get me some help. There’s a lot of good young players out there and somebody is going to be lucky enough to be my sidekick.
McCarver: Is there anyone who you can see fitting in with you?
Marbury: I’m not really supposed to talk about this, but I’m Starbury and I don’t give a damn. There’s a couple guys that I would love to see in New Jersey, maybe even Dion Glover if he falls to the 2nd round. I’d love to have another Yellow Jacket with me. As far as the first rounder goes, as long the guy can ball then he aight with me. There’s a lot of good guys out there so we should be getting much better with this pick.
Buck: Alright Stephon one last question for you, who do you having tonight?
Marbury: I’m gonna have to go with my boy Griffey. He’s just so good at everything he does, he reminds me of myself. It’s tough not to like a guy like that
Buck: Alright thanks for your time tonight Steph, I’m sure the fans at home enjoy seeing the stars of different sports interacting and it was a pleasure to have you sit in with us for a while. We have to go to a commercial break. When we get back Mark McGuire will see how many he can hit over the Green Monster.
Marbury could have a career as a sports analyst after picking Griffey to win it all
