Los Angeles, AP- The Los Angeles Clippers have always been second fiddle to the Los Angeles Lakers. Fan base, talent, success, everything has been in their favor. But as the Lakers Front Office has declared a potential rebuilding process, the Clippers Front Office has responded with a ferocious campaign to gain a larger fanbase. This campaign began during the 2007 SSBL Draft and has continued ever since with the Clippers GM bent on bringing in the local talent from the two most prominent colleges in LA, being USC and UCLA. The Clippers hope that the inclusion of a star UCLA player will help the fanbase increase tremendously. Student Nights will also be held for USC and UCLA students with discount ticket and food prices. "I understand we haven't had the recent success which truly draws an enormous amount of fans, but we believe these local stars can really bring this organization back to relevancy," said Clippers Owner and President of Basketball Operations Mike Klemencic.
The Locals
Kevin Love is a true local boy. Born in Santa Monica, California he chose to attend the University of California Los Angeles. In his one collegiate season, Love averaged 17.5ppg and 10.7rpg in only 29.6 minutes a night. He also shot 55.9% from the field in that season. When asked how he felt about becoming the most recent member of the Los Angeles Clippers he said, "I'm really excited to be able to still play at home. It means a lot to my family that I get to play near them." When asked how he felt about the role he will play in the resurrection of this franchise Love said, "Well to be honest... I want their single game rebounding record by the end of this season. Lorenzen Wright has held that record for almost 7 seasons now, and i dont plan on letting that stand. I plan on being the best rebounder this franchise has ever seen."
Nick Young was born Los Angeles, California, stayed there for college at the University of Southern California, and will continue to play in LA as a Clipper. In his rookie season, he proved to be the most athletic wing the franchise has seen in a while. His fast and emotional play has changed the teams overall offensive mentality moving forward, as well as the teams defensive tenacity. Over the first 39 games of the season, he averaged 15.7ppg before being sent to the DLeague during the All-Star Break to improve upon his shooting range. He will remain in the DLeague for one more season to continue becoming a more diverse offensive threat. When he asked how he felt about being sent to DLeague after a very successful first half of the season he said, "I don't care. The coaches want me to become a better player. Can't fault them for that. So I'll keep working here until they pull me back up to become the weapon they want me to be."
Gabe Pruitt had a very decent first season as a Los Angeles Clipper. Born in Los Angeles and a teammate of Nick Young's at USC, Pruitt showed he was worth the trade for the 2nd round pick and showed promise by averaging 8 points and 4 assists over 19 minutes a game and doing so while shooting 48% from the field. Headed for the dleague, the Clippers Front office hopes Pruitt can become a more well rounded player and become a decent role player as a combo guard due to his size.
Let the Campaign Continue...
The Los Angeles Clippers already have their eye on the 2009 SSBL Draft when Russell Westbrook is suspected to declare for the draft and leave UCLA. When asked about the possibility to play in LA not far from his Long Beach childhood, Westbrook said, "Well I love doing it for UCLA so I can't imagine why that'd change once I'm being paid for it," he chuckled, "And the chance to play next to Kevin [Love] again would be great, but right now I just have to focus on bringing this UCLA squad back to the NCAA Tournament."
LONG LIVE THE CLIPPERS!!!!!
