The 2007-2008 Season kicked off tonight in the SSBL and unlike past years, the Raptors chose to play their inexperienced forwards for the most part. Toronto played a total of 15 games in the 20 day slate, winning just 4. Despite the single digit win total, management says they were able to take a lot of positives out of the overall picture - especially from 2nd year combo forward Shawne Williams.
Owner Mr. Stephens hasn't kept it secret of how high he is on Williams talent, and tonight, Williams was finally able to showcase the fruit of his spoils, posting averages of: 13.2 points 8.7 rebounds 3.3 assists 1.8 steals and 1.4 blocks -- literally stuffing the stat sheet every game. Even though Williams was named a primary offensive option, his shots weren't forced, and his points weren't the product of taking 20 shots per game. Over the 15 game sample, Williams shot .484 from the field, .800 from the free throw line and .421 from beyond the arc. Dwyane Wade was one of his teammates to be incredibly impressed with his play. "Shawne filled it up, he showed why this team was so reluctant to give him up over the past season. We all heard the rumors, the speculation, but he kept his head down and bulled through."
Among the young stand-ins, Allan Ray stood out to many as a viable option in the backcourt as Penny Hardaway is reported to be close to accepting a buyout offer for the final two years of his contract from management as soon as next week. After this year, Toronto will have roughly 8 million dollars in additional cap to offer Ray for a long term deal, which may be more realistic after Ray spends the season in the D-League honing his skills.
All I need is 50 bucks so I'm done ray.
