The SSBL Times is back for another installment of action around SSBL. The 2007 SSBL Draft is complete and with that we will grade the teams based on their made draft selections. We will take a look at how each team did in the first round of the draft. We will also take a look at how the player selected should fit on the team.
Boston Celtics
Player(s) selected: No picks
Miami Heat
Player(s) selected: No picks
New Jersey Nets
Player(s) selected: SF Thaddeus Young
Grade: C
Young didn't stay long enough to enjoy New Jersey as he was shipped off to Los Angeles. We are not sure if this pick was made for LA or the Nets drafted Young to add more frontcourt depth. picking Young this early wouldn't make much sense, if the Nets hadn't made a deal to move Young.
New York Knicks
Player(s) selected: PF/C Tiago Splitter
Grade: C
The Knicks landed a top pick by trading with Philadelphia. The Knicks dealt a franchise PG for this pick. We are shaking our heads not only at the trade to acquire this pick, but the player drafted. As nice as Splitter could be, he is still overseas, and will be for 2 seasons. We understand the Knicks GM was afraid of losing Amare to FA, but how would an overseas player help? We feel the Knicks could have drafted a replacement PG here or even a big like Spencer Hawes.
Orlando Magic
Player(s) selected: PF Sean Williams
Grade: B-
Word is the Magic are rebuilding. They drafted a decent frontcourt player in Williams. On the court, Williams is a defensive minded player. Off the court, the issues pile up for Williams. The Magic GM may start Williams' career off in the D League so he can work on an all around game.
Philadelphia 76ers
Player(s) selected: SF Wilson Chandler
Grade: C+
Philadelphia traded their first lottery pick, and were left one. They decided to go with a shooter here i Chandler. Chandler can play a couple positions and should add more scoring to this young roster.
Washington Wizards
Player(s) selected: SF Corey Brewer
Grade: C
A top 5 pick for the Wizards, and most around the office feel they failed. Taking a peek at their roster, they needed frontcourt help, but went with a wing payer. Players like Spencer Hawes were available, but they went with another combo player. Brewer is a good player, but not sure if it was the right choice here. Personal attachment may have been the reason for this pick.
Atlanta Hawks
Player(s) selected: No picks
Charlotte Hornets
Player(s) selected: No picks
Chicago Bulls
Player(s) selected: SG Aaron Afllalo
Grade: B+
A solid pick for the Bulls in the draft. Afllalo is a scorer and plays good defense. He can play a few positions and adds depth to this roster. He will see backup minutes behind Ray Allen, but what a great tutor to have.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Player(s) selected: PF Carl Landry, PF Glen Davis
Grade: C-
More bigs for the Cavs in the draft. We don't feel they need two, but it is what it is. The Cavaliers needed some backcourt depth and there were some nice players on the board. Players like Aaron Brooks and Marcus Williams could have been more beneficial.
Detroit Pistons
Player(s) selected: C Greg Oden
Grade: A
Obvious choice for Detroit at #2. Oden will be a good player for many years.
Indiana Pacers
Player(s) selected: PF Michael Beasley, PG Ramon Sessions
Grade: B+
Another solid draft for Indiana. Beasley at #4 was a very good selection., Beasley may not start right away, but can play multiple spots, so thats a good addition. Sessions late in the round was a good pick, even if he is in the D League at the start of the season.
Milwaukee Bucks
Player(s) selected: PG Jerryd Bayless, PG Petteri Koponen
Grade: C+
two pint guards for Milwaukee. Bayless isn't a true PG, but may gain better PG skills if sent to the D League. Koponen is another overseas player, and should be a nice addition in a few years.
Toronto Raptors
Player(s) selected: SF Jeff Green, PF Brandan Wright
Grade: B
More depth for the Raptors. Green and Wright may be D League players for this season, since those 2 positions are pretty deep as it is.
Boston Celtics
Player(s) selected: No picks
