With the 2007 Free Agency showcasing some big signings for some not so well known names, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the leagues Best Overlooked Players in 2007. With Vassilis Spanoulis recently getting a max contract from San Antonio, it proves some GM’s still look at stats per 36 when offering money - something that could net teams some real gems.
My best example is Matt Harpring, the main backup on my squad in 2006. I noticed the year before while he played in Seattle, he averaged 8 points in 20 minutes. I basically doubled his minutes (to 40) and his points (to 16) and thought to myself, “Harpring could get me 13-15 points a game, and nobody realizes it.” Sure enough, in 2006, Harpring sported a line of 13.3 points and 7.2 rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench in a clutch role. Playing 36 minutes those numbers could have easily gone up to 15/8, and I got him on the cheap because he was only currently averaging 8 points when he was traded. Harpring still gets ragged on for some reason around the league and I have no idea why. He’s probably one of the most underrated players in the SSBL right now.
So anyway, here’s the list I compiled of the Leagues Best Overlooked Players of the SSBL: (based on theory)
1) G Vassilis Spanoulis -- SAN ANTONIO SPURS
--2007 Stats: [26.0mpg] 14.4ppg/3.1rpg/2.1apg/1.5spg
---Per 36 Stats: 19.9ppg/4.3rpg/2.9apg/2.1spg/1.8topg
Admit it. You never thought to give Spanoulis 81 million dollars, however (based on theory) Spanoulis could give Rmanske 20pts and 2 steals a game next year. Given the fact that Spanoulis is fresh out of his Dleague stints, with 3 camps still available, who says he can’t be averaging 24 points in 3 years? That’s another reason why I see this signing as a risky one - yet well worth the reward if it pays off. High risk, high reward.
2) PF Jamal Sampson -- MILWAUKEE BUCKS
--2007 Stats: [25.3mpg] 8ppg/8.2rpg/1bpg
---Per 36 Stats: 11.4ppg/11.6rpg/1.42bpg
Sampson was the last pick in the first round 3 years ago. 2 seasons ago he posted the same numbers on a struggling Bucks team in a starting role [30mpg]. However, last season Sampson improved his game dramatically, nearly mimicking his stats from 2006 in almost 6 less minutes per game. For a fringe 2nd rounder, 11/11/1.5 isn’t too shabby. In fact, it’s almost worth as much as Dwight Howard is playing now if you factor in Dwight’s offensive deficiency. 1st pick, vs. 28th pick: -3ppg/EVENrpg/+1.2bpg Tell me what you’d rather have considering their placement in the draft…
3) G/F James Jones -- MILWAUKEE BUCKS
--2007 Stats: [19.6mpg] 9.4ppg/1.0spg/1.0 3-PT/game
---Per 36 Stats: 17.3ppg/1.8spg/1.8 3-PT/game
Staying in Milwaukee, who seem to get the best out of their players, James Jones in only making 9 million dollars over the next 2 years. The Bucks have Jones locked in as one of their young cornerstones depending on how he performs next season, but considering his selection in the draft (51st overall) I can’t see him being too expendable in the eyes of Il Mago. Even more impressive is Jones 1 3-PT FG made a game, while playing just under 20mpg. This stat has to rank up there with some of the best, but only a starting role will decide just how good he really is.
4) C Raef LaFrentz -- MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES
--2007 Stats: [26.5mpg] 10.8ppg/7.7rpg/1.4bpg
---Per 36 Stats: 14.7ppg/10.5rpg/1.9bpg
Another guy making just under 10 million dollars over the next 2 years is LaFrentz, Minnesota’s main PF/C backup. The only reason he isn’t starting is because of Adonal Foyle’s incredible defense, but one has to assume that starting C is Raef’s to lose entering the season given Adonal‘s performance compared to Raef‘s. 15 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks is nothing to scoff at, not to mention his 45/70/40 shooting numbers for a 7-footer. One of the most overlooked players for sure.
5) F Matt Harpring -- MIAMI HEAT
--2007 Stats: [21.7mpg] 8.3ppg/4.6rpg/1.0spg
---Per 36 Stats: 13.8ppg/7.6rpg/1.7spg
For all the reasons named above -- Harpring is only being paid 3 million dollars this season, and provides lockdown perimeter defense. Great player off the bench, however if given minutes can be a cheap, perfect solution to put alongside your superstars if you can’t afford anyone better. Harpring is the kind of player that would mimick his real life counterpart: great without being flashy or noticed. Still probably one of the most overlooked guys in the SSBL, not getting any love wherever he goes (except Toronto).
Obviously I didn't take the time to scan every single team, just the players I remember standing out to me. So if you've got a player that you think qualifies, put him on here. Remember: Divide 36 by X (actual minutes played) and then take the value and multiply it by any mentionable stats.
36/26(actual mpg) = 1.38 * 5ppg = 6.9 per 36
