The SSBL Times is back for another installment of action around SSBL. The 2006 SSBL Draft is complete and with that we will grade the teams based on their made draft selections. Some GMs thought this draft was deep, while others thought it was watered down after the top 10 picks. This years draft seemed to strike a fancy by some GMs regardless. We will take a look at how each team did in the first round of the draft. We will also take a look at how the player selected should fit on the team.
Boston Celtics
Player(s) selected: No picks
Miami Heat
Player(s) selected: PF Al Jefferson Arkansas, PG Jose Calderon Spain
Grade: B+
The Heat got very lucky and landed a top 3 pick. They decided to land a big, and some were left wondering how they could pass up Roy. Jefferson will be a very nice player, but will he see enough action to show off his overall game come next season? The Heat then rounded out their 1st round picks with grabbing a veteran PG In Jose Calderon. Calderon is a very good passer and could be used a trade piece if the Heat try to deepen their team.
New Jersey Nets
Player(s) selected: PG Louis Williams Georgia
Grade: C
A risky here by the Nets. The nets have made their star PG unhappy due to the selection, and it could hurt team chemistry come start of the new season. Williams is a shooter in a PG's body, but most feel he was the wrong selection here. The Nets could have gone after players like Foye, Cook and even Gerald Green.
New York Knicks
Player(s) selected: No picks
Orlando Magic
Player(s) selected: No picks
Philadelphia 76ers
Player(s) selected: PF Tyrus Thomas LSU
Grade: C+
A young team trying to build things upward. Thomas is a beast of a forward, but some feel the 76ers should have gone guard here. A player like Foye could have been the better pick, since they lack a true SG.
Washington Wizards
Player(s) selected: SG Ronnie Brewer Alabama
Grade: B-
Washington added depth with their pick and they got a nice player out of it. Brewer could turn into a solid player, but will be behind Mo unless a move is made.
Atlanta Hawks
Player(s) selected: No picks
Charlotte Hornets
Player(s) selected: SG Monta Ellis Mississippi St.
Grade: A+
The Hornets didn't fail with this pick. Ellis is a stud and so young. He will be the face of this franchise for years to come. Look for him to become an All Star type player very soon.
Chicago Bulls
Player(s) selected: PF Shelden Williams Duke
Grade: B
A depth selection by the Bulls. Williams is a good rebounder and defender and should add bulk to the team. He may see a D League stint, but with age against him, look for him to remain on the active roster.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Player(s) selected: PF Rajon Rondo Kentucky, PF Craig Smith Boston College
Grade: B+
Rondo was a nice pickup for the Cavs, but will he be the starter right out of camp? Some think he will be. He has the handles to lead the league in assists in a couple seasons. He needs alot of work on his offensive game, and could learn that from veteran Andre Miller. Smith is a depth selection for Cleveland, and should be stashed away i the D League for a couple seasons if need be.
Detroit Pistons
Player(s) selected: SG Gerald Green Oklahoma St.
Grade: B+
Green is an athletic young prospect, but may need a few years before he is of starter quality. He could find himself in the D League if he does not progress well enough in camp.
Indiana Pacers
Player(s) selected: PF Andray Blatche Syracuse, SG Maurice Ager Michigan St, PF Edin Bavcic Bosnia
Grade: B+
The Pacers were a pretty deep team and got more of it via the draft. Bavcic looks to be a D League stash. Blatche could be the starting PF right out of camp if all goes well. Ager is a nice combo guard and should see backup minutes. Indiana added to their deep roster, and did so well.
Milwaukee Bucks
Player(s) selected: No picks
Toronto Raptors
Player(s) selected: SF Shawne Williams Memphis
Grade: B+
The Raptors were ecstatic with this selection. Williams will be a D League player, but could progress into something more. He has alot of good tools, but is buried on the DC in Toronto thus far. A good selection, nonetheless, by Toronto.
