The SSBL Times is back with another exciting issue. In this issue we will be looking at the race for the 2005-2006 ROY. The ROY trophy is a big honor since it usually propels players to bigger and better things. We will profile five candidates. We like to keep our opinions biased, but a good debate amongst league GMs never hurt either.
ROY Candidates
Danny Granger SF Phoenix Suns
Deron Williams PG Washington Wizards
Chris Paul PG New York Knicks
LaMarcus Aldridge PF Utah Jazz
Nate Robinson PG Sacramento Kings
Danny Granger SF Phoenix Suns
05-06 stats: 13.1ppg 7.0rpg 1.1spg 0.9bpg
Granger is a pretty complete player., He has really helped Phoenix in what is a turnaround season. He has a good overall skill set and should only get better over time. He is the 3rd option on the Suns, but can still get plenty of shots. He may not win the award, but being considered for it is nothing short of commendable.
Deron Williams PG Washington Wizards
05-06 stats: 21.0ppg 7.1apg 1.5spg
Williams was a rookie game snub, and the Wizards GM was not pleased, to say the least. Williams can score for sure, bu his assists numbers are not where they should be. He was a pass first guard at Illinois, but has not translated to that in SSBL. Williams should improve his ball skills this offseason, but that could hinder him from winning ROY. He has been a big asset to the team thus far.
Chris Paul PG New York Knicks
05-06 stats: 13.1ppg 8.8apg 2.1spg
Paul was the #1 overall choice and in many eyes the clear cut winner for the award. he is averaging nearly 9 assists per game his first season, which is quite impressive. He doesn't turn the ball over which is another positive. Paul's scoring is not where many expected it to be, but the Knicks GM is not worried. Paul, like Williams was a pass first guard in college, so scoring will come over time. Paul has won rookie of the month 3 of the 4 months, so all signs point to him winning ROY. Stranger things have happened though in SSBL.
LaMarcus Aldridge PF Utah Jazz
05-06 stats: 15.7ppg 7.5rpg 1.2bpg
Aldridge has been the one bright spot in Utah, and is clearly the future of this team. He really worked on his offense during training camp, and it shows. He can play multiple positions, which makes him more versatile than others. He could be in the final running for ROY, but being a guard heavy league wont work in his favor. Aldridge should see his overall game improve the next training camp.
Nate Robinson PG Sacramento Kings
05-06 stats: 17.6ppg 3.2apg
Robinson has been a nice surprise for the rebuilding Kings. Going into the season, not much was expected of him. He has helped carry the scoring load and seems to be a staple in the team's future. He doesn't offer much outside of scoring, which makes his chances of winning ROY very very slim.
The ROY race looks to be a one horse race, but stay tuned and see how the season unfolds for these young prospects.
