The SSBL Times are back and this time around we look at the whose who when it comes to the MVP race. The MVP race usually consists of guards due to a guard heavy league, but maybe this is the year of a non guard winning the award. We will take a look at some candidates and let you in on some insight on each player.
MVP Candidates
Allen Iverson SG Boston Celtics
Kobe Bryant PG Seattle Supersonics
Jason Kidd PG Toronto Raptors
Joe Johnson SG Portland Trailblazers
LeBron James SF Boston Celtics
Allen Iverson
05-06 stats: 26.2ppg 4.6rpg 7.4apg 2.5spg
career stats (9 seasons): 26.7ppg 4.8rpg 7.9apg 2.3spg
MVP awards: 1 (1998)
Allen Iverson has been a staple all around player in this league since he joined. He can do many things very well and has not decreased rapidly like most do. He is declining due to some standards, but his production should still be MVP caliber until he retires. He once was apart of the 3 headed monster up in Vancouver, but has since relocated to the Northeast. He has led Boston to a very solid record. His teammate, LeBron James, will be mentioned later in this article. With just one MVP under his belt his shot at getting another this season may be out of his grasp. He is an All Star caliber player, but may be outdone by younger players for the MVP crown.
Kobe Bryant
05-06 stats: 25.6ppg 5.3rpg 9.2apg 2.1spg
career stats (9 seasons): 24.4ppg 6.3rpg 8.5apg 2.0spg
MVP awards: 2 (2002, 2004)
Bryant's contract is coming to end after this season. Will that motivate him to win the MVP title and force the Seattle GM to resign him? Bryant has 2 under his belt and wouldn't mind adding a 3rd. The Seattle Gm has been shopping Bryant around this season, but wouldn't move the former MVP for nothing short of amazing. Bryant can do many things well and should battle players like Joe Johnson and Jason Kidd for the 05 MVP title. Many GMs think Joe Johnson is the best player out West, but Bryant thinks otherwise. Look for Bryant to continue his stellar play and be a strong candidate for that MVP prize.
Jason Kidd
05-06 stats: 23.7ppg 5.7rpg 10.6apg 2.3spg
career stats (11 seasons): 23.5ppg 6.1rpg 10.8apg 2.4spg
MVP awards: 3 (2000, 2001, 2003)
Jason Kidd has always been in the MVP talk every seasons. And he deserves all the praise he gets. He has averaged over 22ppg and 10apg for 6 seasons now. Like Iverson, he was apart of the 3 headed monster in Vancouver until he was sent packing to another part of Canada. The Raptors GM has been praising Kidd all seasons long, and has seen his team become a strong favorite for SSBL champions. Kidd leads a Toronto team that was once a young nucleus. being a pass first PG has always benefited Kidd. Kidd can not just pass but can score at a very high clip. Kidd should be in the final 2 man race for the MVP. Jason Kidd has been mentioned by many as the best all around player in the Eastern Conference.
Joe Johnson
05-06 stats: 29.5ppg 6.4rpg 9.6apg 2,5spg
career stats (4 seasons): 25.1ppg 6.7rpg 4.8apg 2.0spg
MVP awards: 0
We wonder what Joe Johnson can not do. He has seen his scoring go up every season since joining the league. He is being heralded as the best player in the Western Conference. The Portland GM thinks he should be considered the best player in the SSBL. We think Johnson will be the favorite for MVP, but may not win the award if his team struggles late in the season. He is the ultimate definition of a MVP, because without him the Blazers would struggle immensely. In just 4 seasons, Johnson has been labeled a superstar. The future for him is very bright.
LeBron James
05-06 stats: 27.1ppg 7.3rpg 6.7apg 1.9spg
career stats (2 seasons): 24.1ppg 7.2rpg 6.4apg 1.6spg
MVP awards: 0
In just two seasons James has propelled to MVP talks. Very impressive, if we do say so ourselves. He can do it all, and could be the dark horse in this guard heavy MVP race. He loves to rebound and isn't shy about passing the ball. he is very young, so the things he are capable of are limitless. With players like Iverson and Kidd aging, look for James to dethrone them as tops in SSBL. He may not have enough credentials to win the MVP title this year, but he will soon enough.
