Coming into this year the Blazers were looking at this season as the one in which they could really contend. No other general managers around the league really paid any attention to the Blazers, why that was I have no idea. However the core was Johnson, Peja and Francis. Fast forward one sim and the entire core of this team has changed drastically and hopefully for the better. Lets take a closer look at these deals.
In a rare deal between division rivals, the Lakers and Blazers exchanged some big names. For the Lakers they landed Steve Francis who is starting to lose a step, but still deadly none the less. Francis is a combo guard who gives the Lakers another ball handler just in case Stepp isn't ready to run the show. The Blazers landed a younger shooting guard that for the moment, would be a part of the future. Gordon was a pure combo guard and can get hot at any time. Also in this deal was Shawn Kemp who while up there in age, still brought a lot of inside scoring. For both teams, they each landed a lot of key pieces.
In this deal the Jazz were completely rebuilding, fresh off trading Webber to the Lakers. The Blazers were able to come in and swoop the young player of the two in Keith Van Horn, though he was never the prolific player that Chris Webber once was. The Blazers traded away Peja Stojakovic who was once considered a bust in the league but found his niche with the Blazers. However since being moved to Utah, he has sadly fell out of favor. The Blazers also dealt some cash considerations and a first round pick. In return the Blazers landed Keith Van Horn who has started playing the best basketball in his life. Thus far with the Blazers KVH is posting 21/7/2. The Blazers want his three point shooting to come along, but they feel that will happen in due time.
The final deal that the Blazers will probably pull off involving big names is the one with the Pacers. In this deal we see the Blazers trade away the pieces that they landed from the Lakers in exchange for Michael Redd. Gordon was a good young player, still only being 22 years old. He sort of struggled with his shot during his time with the Blazers and they were looking for a more consistent product. Insert Michael Redd who comes with a better shot, better inside and better handles. Redd is only 26 years old and is going to be entering his prime during the contract. In this deal the Blazers get Gordon who fits their rebuilding team a lot better. They also land a first round pick and the man that goes by the name of Shawn Kemp.
Overall the Blazers added Keith Van Horn, Tyson Chandler and Michael Redd. All of these players are still young and along side with Joe Johnson and Kenyon Martin form a potent punch for the Blazers. With teams around the league improving, the Blazers are trying to set the tone with these deals. The Blazers can't move any more first round picks, therefore the Blazers are probably prohibited from making any more big deals.
