The 1999 SSBLv4 Draft
Picks 21-29
In case you missed out on the first parts of the series you can catch up here:
Picks 1-10: ssbl4.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=articles&thread=1922&post=12574
Picks 11-20: ssbl4.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=articles&thread=1925&post=12617
Four of the next 9 players are currently looking for a team that is willing to pay them for their less than mediocore services. The other 5 are still employed, but I would be surprised to see more than 3 of these guys in the league 5 years from now.
Gordan Giricek, 21st Overall Pick
1999: Detroit Pistons, SG 22 6'7'' 215 C B C- C+ C- B
2003: Toronto Raptors, SG 26 6'7'' 215 C+ B+ C C+ C- D
268 Career Games: 19.5mpg 5.7ppg 2.9rpg 1.0apg 0.8spg 0.1bpg 1.0topg
Giricek would have been a nice steal in this weak draft had he improved his defensive abilities. While he has worked on all facets of his offense, he is now what he was then, just a spot up shooter. But he is good at that which is why I think he will always find a team in need for his services. Shooters don't decline as quick so we might see him around for a few more seasons.
Grade: B+
Francisco Elson, 22nd Overall Pick
1999: Orlando Magic, C 23 6'11'' 227 C+ C- D B B B
2003: Orlando Magic, C 27 6'11'' 227 C+ C- D B B D
277 Career Games: 12.7mpg 2.6ppg 3.7rpg 0.6apg 0.4spg 0.7bpg 0.8topg
Elson, who has not developed at all since being drafted, signed as a free agent with the team that drafted him and then delt him to the Cavaliers in the last season of his rookie contract. He has yet to see any action this season, but even if the Magic decide not to bring him back next year there will be somebody knocking on his door looking for a big guy to clog the lanes.
Grade: B-
Scott Padgett, 23rd Overall Pick
1999: Indiana Pacers, PF 23 6'9'' 240 C B+ C- C+ C+ B
2003: Boston Celtics, SF 27 6'9'' 240 C B+ C- B- C+ B
128 Career Games: 15.0mpg 3.2ppg 3.1rpg 0.6apg 0.5spg 0.0bpg 0.8topg
After playing all 82 games in his rookie season, Padgett only played 19 games in the 3 seasons that followed. So the Pacers decided to let him walk and he got a gig on the rebuilding Celtics to provide some locker room presence and mentoring. If you want a guy who is 6'9'' but has only blocked one shot in over 1900 minutes to mentor your rookies remains questionable.
Grade: C-
Chucky Atkins, 24th Overall Pick
1999: San Antonio Spurs, PG 25 5'11" 165 C B- B C+ D C
2003: San Antonio Spurs, PG 29 5'11'' 165 C B- B+ C+ D+ D
214 Career Games: 12.3mpg 4.5ppg 1.3rpg 2.5apg 0.4spg 0.1bpg 1.0topg
Being Steve Nash's backup for his entire career, you can assume that Atkins is happy with limited playing time off the bench. Because of his below average skills around the hoop and on the perimeter it is pretty much garantueed that this will be the highest he can reach in the league. His defense is also poor, but let's not send this young man off crying.
Grade: B
Eddie Robinson, 25th Overall Pick
1999: Portland Trailblazers, SF 23 6'8" 210 B- C+ C- B- C B
2003: Free Agent, SG 6'8'' 210 27 C+ C+ C B- C- C
252 Career Games: 15.2mpg 4.0ppg 2.3rpg 1.0apg 0.5spg 0.1bpg 0.7topg
It hurts to see players throw away their career like Eddie Robinson did. Gifted with nice hops and a long body he had what it takes to suceed in this league. His passion for the game was not there and teams see that, which is why he is unemployed at this moment. Even the Harlem Globetrotters are not willing to give the former high flyer a chance.
Grade: D+
Anthony Carter, 26th Overall Pick
1999: Charlotte Hornets, PG 24 6'1" 190 C C+ B B C- B
2003: Vancouver Grizzlies, PG 26 6'1'' 190 C C+ B B- C- C
327 Career Games, 14.2mpg 5.0ppg 1.8rpg 2.8apg 0.7spg 0.1bpg 1.5topg
Carter is one of these players that are very difficult to judge and some of his numbers imply that he his better than his ratings suggest. For example, he recorded a triple double when playing for the Charlotte Hornets, an achievement few players in the league have on their resume. And even though he has not seen a single minute of action this season, I'm confident we will see him on the floor sooner or later.
Grade: B
Trajan Langdon, 27th Overall Pick
1999: Utah Jazz, SG 23 6'3" 197 C B C- C+ D+ B
2003: Free Agent, SG 6'3'' 197 27 C A- C B- C C
236 Career Games: 30.6mpg 6.8ppg 4.0rpg 1.8apg 1.2spg 0.2bpg 2.1topg
Langdon is clearly the exception on this list. He never came off the bench his entire career, but this trend ended after his 3rd seasons after which he has not played a single game. I feel that Langdon has made the most out of his possibilities, which are not many if you are a undersized 2 guard without ballhandling skills. Maybe he will be lucky and a contender will sign him to stengthen their depth for the Playoffs.
Grade: A
Courtney Alexander, 28th Overall Pick
1999: Charlotte Hornets, SG 22 6'6" 200 C+ C+ C C+ C A
2003: Free Agent, SG 6'6'' 200 26 C+ C C C+ C- C
17 Career Games: 4.0mpg 1.2ppg 0.4rpg 0.2apg 0.1spg 0.0bpg 0.3topg
Not sure what the Hornets saw in Alexander when they selected him, but they must have forgotten right after because he did not see any action until his 3rd season. The brief garbage minutes he earned back then will be all for him in this league.
Grade: F
Leon Smith, 29th Overall Pick
1999: Charlotte Hornets, PF 19 6'10'' 215 C+ C- D- B C A
2003: Free Agent, PF 6'10'' 215 23 C+ C- D B- C C
30 Career Games: 6.6mpg 2.0ppg 1.7rpg 0.3apg 0.1spg 0.4bpg 0.4topg
The Hornets would have been better off selling these 2 picks for virtually anything that came their way, but instead they decided to select another bench warmer right after picking Alexander. Smith played a few more games, but both never got a chance to play for a pot in the regular rotation.
Grade: F
