The Golden State Warriors GM has been busy on the phones as of late to try and improve his team. He is under alot of scrutiny from other GMs as they feel he is underachieving and allowing his team to suffer, when they are not a bad team. He has responded by making moves that, in his eyes, better the team greatly.
We will start by taking a look at the Warriors drafted players and then each trade.
Golden State Warriors draft PG Kirk Hinrich, C Chris Kaman and PF Maciej Lampe.
The Warriors had 3 top 20 picks in the 2002 draft and was hoping to fill their roster with young, but solid talent. The Warriors landed 2 needs with their first 2 picks. Center Chris Kaman, out of Central Michigan, was taken with their first pick. Kaman, known for his rebounding and defense, would virtually walk into Warriors camp with the starting 5 spot locked up. Kaman did nothing to dismiss those claims as he had a good training camp, and proved his worth as a starting center in the league. With their next selection, the Warriors took a PG. Kirk Hinrich, out of Kansas, was seen as a risky pick at this selection. GM Williams knew Hinrich would be a solid PG in the league, and couldn't pass him up. Hinrich improved in TC and has already shown to many other GMs that he is a solid PG and can hang with the rest of the PGs in the league. Hinrich is currently 6th in the league in steals, with 2.6. The final selection for the Warriors was a late 1st round pick. They wanted to add depth, but also stay young. They were on the clock, and has the clock ticked they were still unsure. GM Williams decided to pull the trigger on a young unproven European guy. Maciej Lampe, out of Poland, was Williams' guy at 20. Lampe, all of 18 years of age, will have a few years before he is asked to produce on a constant basis. He is young and seems to be willing to learn from the likes of Kaman and Antawn Jamison.
With the draft over, the Warriors looked forward to Free Agency. The Warriors were over the salary cap, but still need to try and land some more depth. The Warriors had to wait before anyone signed with them. PFs Michael Ruffin and Kenny Thomas decided to make California their home. Both players would see time behind Jamison at the 4 spot. After FA ended, the Warriors signed PG Pepe Sanchez to a minimum contract.
Trade Recap (before preseason)
Sonics-Warriors:
The Warriors dealt away Rick Fox in the deal. They had been trying to move him for some time. He wasn't living up to the expectations GM Williams had when they signed him back during FA last season. The Warriors also sent away Eddie House. House, an expiring, was slated to start at SG for the Warriors. He was who the Sonics were targeting in the deal. As much as GM Williams didn't wan to part with House, he knew getting rid of Fox would help the team long term. Coming to Golden State was a young PF/C, Jelani McCoy. McCoy would fight for the starting PF spot. Getting a couple expirings was also key for the Warriors. GM Williams feels he made out very nicely in the deal.
Pre-Season Recap:
The Warriors ended the preseason with a 8-6 record. Promising, but not good enough in Williams' eyes. With Ginobili slated as the starting SG, the Warriors lack a true scorer. The Warriors saw promising things in the form of Kaman and Hinrich throughout the preseason. Antawn Jamison led the team in scoring, and proved to be the team leader.
Trade Recap (before season start and before Sim 2)
Sonics-Warriors:
These two teams dealt again, and this time for future assests. The Warriors wanted to address their SG need, and felt they did so for the future in this deal. Sani Becirovic will look to compete for a starting spot next season. All that is lost in the deal is the GS 2006 1st. The Warriors are hoping that the team will be a contending squad come that season.
Hawks-Warriors:
The Warriors addressed their SG need in this deal. Landing Isaiah Rider was a big step in the right direction for Golden State. The Warriors had to part with their starting PF McCoy, but feel Jamison can be more effective at the 4. Rider will step right in as the starting SG and allow Manu to garner backup minutes.
76ers-Warriors:
The Warriors decided to ship the veteran Rider after only one sim together. Rider was shipped to Philadelphia in exchange for 2 younger players. Larry Hughes will take over for Rider at he 2, and Lewis will become the starting SF for Golden Sate. With these two younger players, look for the Warriors to continue to build on their youth. Sending away a 1st was not in the plan for GM Williams, but had to, to seal the deal.
Blazers-Warriors:
This deal saw Peja leave California in return for 2 expirings. Peja was the backup SF, but look for Aaron Williams to step in to that spot now. Peja is a good shooter, but wasn't progressing like the Warriors thought he would. Gaining cash will only help the progression of the younger guys.
As you can see, the Warriors have transformed in such a short time frame. GM Williams wants this team to contend for the West title this year, and wants his team to be taken serious. With the team he has formed now, look for other teams to worry when they see the Warriors on their schedule.
