2003 SSBL Free Agency:
Another year of the big spenders?
The 2003 SSBL Free Agency period is upon us. This year could be different than many others. We will take a look at what teams have money to spend. While we look at teams under the cap, we will look at players they could target to fill needs. Free agency is a time for teams to fill their rosters and fill needs they lack. We will look at the Western Conference teams in this edition.
Teams that have cash to spend (must have over 4 million to qualify a write-up.)
Houston Rockets
Cap Room: $7,599,568
The Rockets lack depth, but also lack a true PG. They could move Wagner to PG and target a SG as well. If they leave Wagner at SG, look for them to offer a big long term deal to Andre Miller. Miller would fit nicely with the young Bosh and Carter. If they land Miller, they need to fill out their roster more with league minimum offers and such.
Utah Jazz
Cap Room: $12,040,539
A contract year is on tap for the Jazz. They need to win more, and quickly. A solid SF is what they lack to round out their roster. options include Jalen Rose, Spreewell and even Rider. Depth is also an issue for this team.
Seattle Supersonics
Cap Room: $4,631,637
The Sonics GM has been trying to upgrade his roster before the FA period. Word is he may stand pat as is even with cash in his pockets. More forntocurt help wouldn't hurt this team. Dalembert is the only center on the roster, and this team might be in trouble if they don't find a backup for him.
As you can see the Western Conference has very few teams with money to burn. This free agency period may be an all out war to wrangle in the best FA from the class.
Only time will tell to see who is a FA winner, or a loser.
