Trailblazers: Joe Johnson
Going into the lottery, the Blazers were hoping for a lot of luck in landing the first overall pick. Just one year removed by the stunning decision of Michael Finley, the Blazers were ready to rebuild the future in Portland. The Blazers eventually landed the first overall pick and faced a choice between Joe Johnson and Pau Gasol. After bringing in both players for extensive workouts and interviews the Blazers went with Joe Johnson. Johnson does it all, he can handle the ball, play three positions and most importantly he can score. For a team that is rebuilding from scratch and don't have their first round picks in the next two years, they can't wait for a project like Gasol. Look for Johnson to make a ton of noise this year for the fans in Portland.
Warriors: Pau Gasol
Heading into the draft the last thing you want is to have a controversy as to who is running the team. There were a lot of rumors swirling about the potential firing of the now defunct GM, but even amidst all of that you can't miss on a second pick. The Warriors selected the foreign prospect Pau Gasol who joins a young and talented team in Golden State. Gasol will join Magloire to anchor the front line. Rounding out the team is Jamison, Barkley and Manu. Gasol is a project player and will need to be brought along, he found the best spot for him. With the established young talent there already Gasol can just play his game and develop for a year or two.
Jazz- Tony Parker
Ever since the days of Stockton, the Jazz have been looking for a point guard that Sloan can stand. Rakocevic and Cleaves were tried, but they didn't set the bar to high. In comes lightning quick Tony Parker out of France. For the Jazz they have one other player really, Kenyon Martin who likes to get out and run. Well the tandem of Parker-Martin seem to be a match made in heaven. Parker still has a lot to work on, mainly his shooting. However he can get to the rim at will and has a penchant for coming up with timely skills. He needs to also work on his PG skills, but playing for Sloan should help out a whole lot. The new PF-PG tandem of the Jazz are here and they hope they can live up to the pressure.
Heat- Zach Randolph
The rebuilding process got underway in Miami last year when Zo bolted for greener pastures. The Heat were a powerful team but decided to rebuild from scratch. During the year they traded away Grant Hill for this pick. Zach Randolph comes in as one of the most ready prospects in the draft. He can score down low and is a true back to the basket scorer. He is also extremely effective using his body to box out, making him one of the better rebounders in the draft. The Heat landed a big time stats player with Randolph, though his defense is lacking. For a team rebuilding though, Randolph will fit in just fine.
Suns- Tyson Chandler
Another team dealing with the loss of a max free agent, the Suns find themselves with a top five pick. The Suns selected Tyson Chandler with this pick and he is as high risk/high reward as they come thus far. Chandler has extremely long arms and can run the floor amazingly well for a guy of his size. However his offensive game is limited to within five feet of the basket and put backs. Where he does excel however is shotblocking and rebounding the ball. The Suns have some people who can score the ball in Phoenix, thus easing the transition for Chandler. The Suns are another team that will start rebuilding soon and Chandler kicks off that process.
