In this session the big men took the court today to see where this draft stands in terms of power forwards and centers. We will pretty much take a look at all of the prospects because this is a shallow class this year, not many entries this year.
The drill coordinator first started off with simple suicides, wanting to see the conditioning of the players. Right off the bat two players stood out and not for a good reason, Ha Seung Jin and Pavel Podkolzin are both slow and uncoordinated. Listening to one scout speak he was heard stating the following "These two guys have no business being drafted, someone GM will roll the dice on the fact they're tall and that's it." Neither one of these players look like they belong in a system that's not slow paced.
Continuing the drills the next one up was jumping and my god you already knew who stood out, Eddy Curry. People knew that Dwight Howard could jump, he has a freakish wing span and is known for being a high flyer. However watching Curry get up there with his frame was impressive to the scouts. Curry being generously weighed in at 285 can really get up there on the ball. This concluded the drills and now it was time to get to what everyone wanted to see, the 1 on 1 matchups.
In a bold move Andris Biedrins stepped up and challenged high school phenomenon Dwight Howard. Andris wanted to leave an impression on the scouts. Both players are very raw on offense, both are limited to just dunks and layups right now, that was the general consensus from scouts. However the thing that impressed scouts most were the impact that both players can make on the defensive end. It was a very sloppy match up because neither player has any low post moves, jumper. These two players are definitely projects at this point in time.
The next match was what the crowd was buzzing about all day long, Eddy Curry and Emeka Okafor. Okafor is viewed as the SSBL's most ready center defensively, Curry being viewed as the most offensively ready center. The match up didn't let down at all. Curry actually has a nice move off the dribble, on one play he gave Emeka a pump fake and got him to jump, however Emeka recovered but Curry gave him a quick spin and got the dunk off. The quickness and explosiveness Curry displayed once again blew away the scouts. Curry was getting the better end of Okafor, but scouts didn't knock Okafor at all because he was making Eddy work on every single play. Both of these players are sure first lottery picks in addition to Howard.
In the very underwhelming class there might only be six first rounders amongst this group, a huge far cry from previous years. Eddy Curry, Dwight Howard, Emeka Okafor, Andris Biedrins are the sure fire first round players. Guys like Brandon Bass, David Harrison, Jamal Sampson and Kris Humprhies are on the cusp.
