The SSBL has been a guard driven league in past seasons, and this season is no different. With the past 5 years MVP being won by either a PG or SG, we can only assume one of those two positions will take home the trophy again this season. There are 5 players that have been selected for balloting amongst the leagues 29 General Managers. Let's examine the 5 candidates for this year's award:
1. Jason Kidd PG Vancouver Grizzlies
Team Record: 49-18 (1st in West/SSBL)
2003-2004 Statistics:
24.1 PPG/6.3 RPG/12.6 APG/2.4 SPG--47%FG/78%FT/40%3PT
It can be argued that Kidd is the best player on the best team, next to Allen Iverson. Despite delivering the ball to his teammates a league best 12.6 times per game, Kidd still manages to score close to 25 Points per contest. Kidd is a two-time MVP award winner, in 2000 and 2001. There is a strong feeling he will be a 3 time champion come the end of the regular season.
2. Allen Iverson SG Vancouver Grizzlies
Team Record: 49-18
2003-2004 Statistics:
28.4 PPG/5.6 RPG/4.9 APG/2.7 SPG--50%FG/83%FT/41%3PT
Iverson, along with Kidd is considered the best player on the best team in the league. Both players have their own ways of winning a game, and both do different things perfectly along with the usual 25 points per game and incredible defense. Iverson in this case is a clutch shooter, winning countless games for the Grizzlies this year, and the 76ers in past years. Iverson could be the runner up in the MVP race, but there is no doubt he is the best 2-guard in the league right now.
3. Kobe Bryant PG Seattle Supersonics
Team Record: 37-35 (12th West)
2003-2004 Statistics:
28.2 PPG/6.3 RPG/9.4 APG/2.4 SPG--47%FG/83%FT/40%3PT
The reigning MVP is having another great year, but it won't be as likely for him to repeat this season. Traded from the Western Conference champions last season to the Supersonics has hurt his chances for Most Valuable Player, as the Sonics are clearly out of playoff contention for this season. However, the fact that he has led the Sonics almost single handedly to a winning record in the tough Western Conference is merit enough to take home the award in some people's eyes.
4. Eddie Jones SG Atlanta Hawks
Team Record: 45-26 (1st East)
2003-2004 Statistics:
26.9 PPG/5 RPG/3.5 APG/2.9 SPG--46%FG/81%FT/36%3PT
Eddie Jones has proven to be one of the best guards in the game at this point in his career. Averaging a career best in steals and TOpg, Jones leads the best team in the Eastern Conference since the days of Dominique Wilkins. Jones was acquired from the Kings earlier in the season, but that doesn't change his qualifications as a candidate for MVP honors. The race will be tough, but we see Jones still having a slight chance to win this award.
5. Stephon Marbury PG New Jersey Nets
Team Record: 35-32 (6th East)
2003-2004 Statistics:
24.8 PPG/3.7 RPG/9.7 APG/1.4 SPG--47%FG/86%FT/44%3PT
As long as Marbury plays in the East, he will be considered one of the best PG's in the league, playing on a depleted team as the number one option. This year is nothing special for Marbury, as he continues to average his career numbers in 25 points and 10 assists, however, those numbers are still good enough to consider him an MVP. If the Nets do exceptionally well in the final two weeks of the season, expect Marbury to get even more consideration for the honor.
Honorable Mentions: Joe Johnson SG Trailblazers , Kevin Garnett PF Timberwolves, Shaquille O'Neal C Grizzlies, Erick Dampier C Hawks, Tim Duncan PF Pacers, Chris Webber PF Kings, Antonio McDyess PF Nuggets, Tracy McGrady SF Spurs, Steve Nash PG Spurs
