RAPTORS SPORT NEW LOOK
The Toronto Raptors have unveiled their new uniforms that will be worn beginning the 2004 season. This will mark the 3rd time in the teams 8 year franchise that they have adjusted their look.
Most recall the horrid, but fantastic cult image of the pin striped black and white uniforms from their expansion year, up until the 2000-2001 season. Many call this uniform the best of all time, even fashionable to this day - being the most unique, and overall "coolest" uniforms ever worn on the court.
The summer of 2000, is when franchise then changed to a solid purple uniform with a modernized RAPTORS printed on the front. This uniform, coupled with a new court when they moved from the SkyDome to the newly built Air Canada Centre, proved to be very popular amongst fans as sales steadily rose each year since 2000.
With the recent drafting of Dwyane Wade, the team wanted to give it's look a face lift. The new uniforms will simply be a color change, and the structure of the uniform will remain the same as before. The color scheme will be black and bright red, the same color as the "Raptor" in the teams official logo. Center court will be changed to a "Raptor Claw", thus ending the reign of the infamous Raptor dribbling a basketball.
Some fans are disappointed that the team will not embrace the Raptor as it once had, instead signifying the creature is in fact dead, and the team is a reminiscence instead of a reincarnation. However, most apparel to be sold with the new color scheme will feature the Raptor, and it is rumored that it will also continue to sell the previous color scheme as well as the new one.
This should prove to be a popular option, as the new colors have yet to be tested in the local market, and because it was just a mere 3 years ago that the purple uniforms came into use, many fans may take this as a sign of instability from within the team.
Management will release an official report of sales and popularity amongst the new apparel and results will be issued as they are completed by the end of next season.
