The 2000 SSBLv4 Draft
Picks 1-10
7 years have gone by, and the first round picks of the 2000 Draft have long finished playing out their rookie contracts. So lets take a look at how the players have developed, who is bust and who cashed in on his potential.
Elton Brand, 1st Overall Pick
2000: Atlanta Hawks, PF 21 6'8'' 260 B C- D+ B B- A
2007: Houston Rockets, PF 28 6'8'' 260 A- C- C- B+ A- C
618 Career Games: 32.6mpg 21.5ppg 9.9rpg 2.1apg 0.9spg 1.3bpg 2.2topg
Brand was the sure shot number one pick in a intriguing draft and he did not disappoint his first time as he won the Rookie of the Year award in 2000. However that didn't stop the Hawks from trading him entering his 3rd season and after he elevated his skills to participate in the All Star Game, he was traded again, this time to his current team the Rockets. He just entered his prime, but it's doubtful if he will elevate his game further to join the leagues elite.
Grade: A
Lamar Odom, 2nd Overall Pick
2000: Minnesota Timberwolves, PF 19 6'10'' 220 B- C C+ C+ B- A
2007: Utah Jazz, PF 26 6'10'' 220 B+ C+ B- A- B C
596 Career Games: 32.4mpg 14.3ppg 7.7rpg 4.3apg 1.0spg 0.5bpg 1.8topg
Odoms great rookie season showed alot of promise, however it was one of the best seasons of his career. Buried in the deep Timberwolves rotation, he never managed to develop his game to the point that scouts envisioned when he was drafted. Most notably winning the 6th Man of the Year award in 2004, Odom was traded to the Utah Jazz last season where he is once again coming off the bench. Tough luck!
Grade: B+
Kenyon Martin, 3rd Overall Pick
2000: Utah Jazz, PF 23 6'8'' 230 B+ D+ C- B C+ B
2007: Los Angeles Lakers, PF 30 6'8'' 230 B+ C- C- B B+ D
603 Career Games: 28.2mpg 13.4ppg 7.9rpg 2.0apg 0.5spg 1.2bpg 2.3topg
When he entered the league, the Jazz thought they were getting a potential 20-10 guy who can also anchor the team on defense. And while Martin averaged 20+ ppg in his first two seasons, his production dropped like a stone the years after. Even though he has developed into a fine rebounder lately, his defensive liabilities are something everyone must be surprised by. After signing with the Blazers in 2004 he is now trying to secure a ring backing up the Lakers frontcourt.
Grade: C+
Richard Hamilton, 4th Overall Pick
2000: Vancouver Grizzlies, SG 22 6'7'' 185 C+ B C+ B- C- B
2007: Denver Nuggets, SG 29 6'7'' 185 B B+ C B C- C
588 Career Games: 32.1mpg 15.0ppg 5.0rpg 2.9apg 1.4spg 0.1bpg 1.9topg
Hamilton never had the potential to become a superstar but he was the starting shooting guard on the Grizzlies championship team. After being traded to the Eastern Conference his production improved vastly, but this momentum only lasted for 3 seasons. On top of enduring a long injury this season, he is also buried on the Nuggets depth chart as a rotation player.
Grade: B+
Stromile Swift, 5th Overall Pick
2000: Houston Rockets, PF 21 6'8'' 215 B C- D B- C+ A
2007: New Jersey Nets, C 28 6'8'' 215 B+ C- C- A- B- D
575 Career Games: 28.4mpg 13.2ppg 8.5rpg 1.7apg 0.8spg 1.5bpg 2.0topg
After playing the first 3 seasons with the team that drafted him, Swift has bounced around the league continously, never playing more than two seasons with a single team. He is currently in his 2nd season with the New Jersey Nets where he is their starting center. He has developed into a solid contributor and even though inconsistent, can fill the stat sheet in various categories.
Grade: A-
Erick Barkley, 6th Overall Pick
2000: Golden State Warriors, PG 22 6'0'' 185 C+ B- C+ B D+ A
2003: Los Angeles Lakers, PG 29 6'0'' 185 B B C+ A- D B
461 Career Games, 15.2mpg 7.9ppg 1.6rpg 2.5apg 0.7spg 0.1bpg 1.8topg
Barkley has develop into a fine role player and volume scorer, but being trapped as a shooting guard in a point mens' body has held back his career considerably. Now he can be considered an elite backup for a team that needs more scoring than passing from a point guard. He was defenitly picked too early as there were better prospects left on the board.
Grade: C
Mike Miller, 7th Overall Pick
2000: Detroit Pistons, SF 20 6'8'' 215 C+ B+ C C+ C+ A
2007: Detroit Pistons, SF 27 6'8'' 215 C A C C+ C+ D
593 Career Games: 30.8mpg 12.0ppg 6.7rpg 3.6apg 0.8spg 0.1bpg 1.8topg
Mike Miller showed alot of promise during his rookie season, but eventually developed into a spot up shooter, at which he is marvelous. All other facets of his game have stagnated and this season is defenitly a low point in his career. The Pistons have been trying to trade him forever, a task that will only get more difficult until he becomes an expiring.
Grade: B-
Hidayet Turkoglu, 8th Overall Pick
2000: Seattle Supersonics - SF 21 6'10'' 220 C+ B C+ C+ C A
2007: Charlotte Hornets, PF 28 6'10'' 220 B- A- C+ C+ C C
598 Career Games: 34.4mpg 18.0ppg 5.9rpg 3.7apg 1.2spg 0.2bbp 2.1topg
I can only assume Turkoglos career stats would be better if he were playing on another team right now. All of his numbers dropped considerably since he joined the Hornets, most notably his scoring. Before that he enjoyed his first and only All Star appearance in 2005. He has played all positions but center during his career, but I think getting back from the post on the wings will help his game.
Grade: A
Jamaal Magloire, 9th Overall Pick
2000: Golden State Warriors, C 22 6'11'' 243 B- D D+ B C+ B
2007: Milwaukee Bucks, C 29 6'11'' 243 C+ D C- B+ C+ D
495 Career Games: 21.8mpg 6.3ppg 6.3rpg 1.3apg 0.6spg 0.7bpg 1.4topg
The Warriors had 2 top 10 picks in the 2000 Draft and failed miserably. While Magloire looked like a decent pick when he was drafted, he now is nothing more than a garbage player who didn't even play a single minute last season. Magloires most notable career achievement are 2 championship rings as a backup on the Vancouver Grizzlies. And the fact that the league office still cannot spell his name right, after 7 years.
Grade: D
Quentin Richardson, 10th Overall Pick
2000: Washington Wizards, SG 20 6'5'' 215 C B C- B- C B
2007: Philadelphia 76ers, SF 27 6'5'' 215 B A- C- A- C C
549 Career Games: 32.8 mpg 18.4ppg 6.4rpg 2.7apg 1.3spg 0.3bpg 3.3topg
After being dealt to the Clippers in his rookie season and not showing so much promise in his first 3 years, Richardson became a 20 ppg force the season thereafter. He is a high profile scorer, attempting over 400 3 pointers last season while making 40% of them. His defense is stellar, but his limited ball handling has stopped him from reaching the next level.
Grade: A+
