The SSBL Times is back for another installment of action around SSBL. The 2006 SSBL Draft is complete and with that we will grade the teams based on their made draft selections. Some GMs thought this draft was deep, while others thought it was watered down after the top 10 picks. This years draft seemed to strike a fancy by some GMs regardless. We will take a look at how each team did in the first round of the draft. We will also take a look at how the player selected should fit on the team.
Dallas Mavericks
Player(s) selected: SG JJ Redick Duke, PG Jordan Farmer UCLA
Grade: B-
The mavericks goal was to draft a SG, and they completed that goal. They traded down and got a sharpshooter in JJ Redick. Redick doesn't offer much outside of a very solid outside game, but should help this young team over time. With their second pick in the 1st round, the Mavericks decided to get more backcourt help. We question this move as we thought they could have grabbed a big to help their thin frontcourt. Players like Josh Bone and Hilton Armstrong could have worked here.
Denver Nuggets
Player(s) selected: PF Joel Freeland England
Grade: C
The Nuggets drafted a player that will likely not see any time on the court for a couple seasons. Freeland is a promising big, but will all but likely see the next two seasons in the D League. He could help this team down the road, but may take longer than some expect to develop. The Nuggets could have grabbed a backcourt player since their backcourt could use some depth. Players like Sefolosha, Redick and Rodriguez were there for the taking, but were overlooked.
Houston Rockets
Player(s) selected: SG Thabo Sefolosha
Grade: B+
Houston needed a SG and got one. The SG class was quite weak, so grabbing the best SG available was a goo move for this team. We feel Thabo was a steal here, as he should have a bit earlier in the draft. he has alot of tools, but just needs some time to define them more. He is not a starter yet, but if this team fails to find a replacement for DaJuan Wagner, look for Thabo to be pressured into a starting role. He could be come quite the player if he works hard at his overall game.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Player(s) selected: No Picks[/i
San Antonio Spurs
Player(s) selected: PG Marcus Williams UCONN
Grade: B-
Williams is the safe pick for the Spurs. He may not have been the bets PG on the board, but he should fit a backup role nicely. The Spurs aren't terribly desperate for a starter like most teams in the lottery, so finding a safe pick was key here. We think they could have gotten some frontcourt help with the pick as well.
Utah Jazz
Player(s) selected: C Joakim Noah C Florida, PG Randy Foye Villanova
Grade: A+
Utah did very well in this year's draft. they got two players who could help in the rebuild process there. They aren't a very deep team, so finding players who can step right in was key. They landed a big and a guard who should be starters for them come the start of the new seasons. Noah is a defensive minded player and should develop very nicely. Foye is one of those players who may be a stud, but you aren't sure of how his game transl;ates to the pros. Time will tell if Foye will be more than a solid backup.
Vancouver Grizzlies
Player(s) selected: PF Paul Millsap PF La Tech
Grade: C+
The pick made by Vancouver was a risky one in some of our writers eyes. They needed help badly upfront but was Millsap the right guy. Some feel that a player like Tyrus Thomas would have been the safer choice. Some also feel they should have grabbed a p[layer Randy Foye, since their backcourt isn't as strong. They are young and have cap, but it all starts with the draft, and we don't know if they will come out winners.
Golden State Warriors
Player(s) selected: PG Sergio Rodriguez
Grade: B-
Golden State did their best to land in this draft, despite its weakness. They managed to grab a late 1st round selection and some feel they did a good job here. they decided to draft a PG, and some may be shaking their heads about it. The Warriors GM may try and go with a 2 PG backcourt, since it has been successful for other teams in years past. They need a true SG, and if they cant land one via FA, they may starts Sergio there. Some thought he would be a D League project player, but some feel He would be a nice addition to the active roster this coming season as either a starter or backup to both guard spots.
Los Angeles Clippers
Player(s) selected: PG Kyle Lowry Villanova
Grade: A
The Clippers needed a PG since their once heralded leader Jaric split for FA. If the Clippers cant reel Jaric back in, look for Lowry to get a long look as the new starter.
Los Angeles Lakers
Player(s) selected: No Picks
Phoenix Suns
Player(s) selected: SG Daequan Cook SG Ohio State
Grade: B-
The Suns got a young promising shooter, but was it the right pick. Seems the GM was not completely there to make the right pick here. Cook should be a nice backup, but some feel the Suns could have gotten more for this stage in the game.
Portland Trailblazers
Player(s) selected: PF Hilton Armstrong UCONN, SG Shannon Brown Michigan St.
Grade: A
Portland struck gold in the draft. They got some nice players who will be nice additions to an already deep team. look for these players to see D League stints, but become solid payers in a few seasons.
Sacramento Kings
Player(s) selected: SG Brandon Roy Washington
Grade: A+
A homerun for Sacramento this year. They landed a very good player in Roy, who should not have dropped as far as he did. Alot of Gms were shocked when he fell to the Kings at #4. The Kings will use Roy as their staring SG and will not have to use a 2 PG system anymore. Roy should become a very good payer sooner than later. The Kings GM should be quite happy with this selection.
Seattle Supersonics
Player(s) selected: No Picks
