2003 was year of the greatest draft the SSBL has seen in a very long time, offering some of the leagues greatest future stars like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony. However, there are a few others that have been flying under the radar for most of the season.
1. LeBron James SF Boston Celtics
1st Overall 2003 SSBL Draft
2003-2004 Statistics:
23.2 PPG/6.7 RPG/6.2 APG/1.4 SPG--47%FG/67%FT/40%3PT
LeBron is the favorite to win the award, simply because of his dominance so far in his rookie campaign. He really has no weakness in any aspect, but one would contend his FT shooting will be a problem down the road if he does not improve his shot. Either way, LeBron is one of a select few to average 20 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists in their rookie year. Expect James to be named ROY tomorrow night.
2. Carmelo Anthony SF Chicago Bulls
2nd Overall 2003 SSBL Draft
2003-2004 Statistics:
24.4 PPG/9.2 RPG/4.2 APG/1.4 SPG--46%FG/73%FT/28%3PT
Some would argue Carmelo is just as likely to win the award as James, however, Carmelo simply doesn't have the shot that LeBron does, as well as not proving he can take over a game simply like the number one selection can. While this is not a knock on his game - because regardless of ROY, Anthony is an incredible player. If this were any other draft, and James was absent, Anthony would be a sure shot #1 choice.
3. Dwyane Wade SG Toronto Raptors
3rd Overall 2003 SSBL Draft
2003-2004 Statistics:
19.7 PPG/6 RPG/3.9 APG/1.6 SPG/1.1BPG--45%FG/76%FT/31%3PT
Dwyane Wade was chosen with the 3rd pick, and rounds off the top 3 of the 03 draft. Wade has proven to be the most gifted perimeter defender in the draft, and some would argue, the best overall defender out of this draft class. Averaging 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks is a mark highly unlikely for even the most veteran defenders. Wade should be a special player - just not special enough to take home the award this season.
4. Gilbert Arenas SG Phoenix Suns
6th Overall 2003 SSBL Draft
2003-2004 Statistics:
22.5 PPG/4.3 RPG/3.9 APG/1.9 SPG--44%FG/80%FT/38%3PT
Many GM's believe Gilbert could have won ROY if he were only playing PG for the team, however Phoenix has decided it would be better to let a more experience Bobby Jackson run the team while Arenas was acclimated into the league. Who knows what Arenas could have done running the team, however because the Suns are so bad, many haven't even noticed how well Gilbert has been playing this year, not to mention his Rookie-Sophomore game MVP trophy he already has on his mantle.
5. Amar'e Stoudemire PF New York Knicks
4th Overall 2003 SSBL Draft
2003-2004 Statistics:
19.1 PPG/9.4 RPG/1.3 SPG--43%FG/77%FT
Amar'e, like Gilbert, is playing for a bad team and therefore has mostly been overlooked despite his great numbers as the Knicks starting Power Forward. Like many rookie performers this season, he might be a viable candidate if it weren't for James and Anthony. Another player who will have a fantastic career. It's just not his time to shine in the league.
