The 1999 SSBLv4 Draft
Picks 1-10
The first round picks of the 1999 Draft have finished playing out their rookie contracts last offseason, so lets take a look at how the players have developed, who is bust and who cashed in on his potential. Notice the miracles of cosmetic and biogenetical surgery as some players aged quicker or slower than others!
Shawn Marion, 1st Overall Pick
1999: Vancouver Grizzlies, SF 21 6'7'' 215 B- C- C+ B B- A
2003: Philadelphia 76ers, SF 25 6'7'' 215 B+ C C+ A- B- B

Marion has had a solid career in the league so far, most notably winning the 2001 Championship with the Grizzlies. But he never developed a consistent jump shot and though versatile is not the franchise player that the Grizzlies hoped for and so he was traded this offseason as part of the package for Allen Iverson. As you read on you will see that there are better players that the Grizzlies could have picked.

Kirilenko has benefited from staying overseas with Moscow for 2 seasons where he started to work intensivly on his jump shot immediatly after he was drafted. In just his 2nd season in SSBLv4, he was awarded with All Defensive 2nd Team honors. His offense keeps improving so the hope is still there that one day you might see him in the All Star Game. For now he is still on a rookie contract.

Baron Davis has developed some nice offense over the years and had 3 good seasons early on, however he never became the playmaker and defender that the scouts raved about when he was in college. As of today, he has bounced around the league a bit and is now coming off the bench as a luxury sub for the New Jersey Nets.

After being traded midway through his rookie season and winning his Rookie Of The Year Award in Charlotte, Francis is now back with the team that drafted him. He is having a career low in turnovers this season, one of his major deficits since he entered the league. But besides that, his game is complete and so he has had the best career out of all 1999 draftees.

Drafted as the 2nd "Euro" in the top five of this draft, Ginobilis career has been anything but bright. He had some decent seasons on a untalented Warriors team, but by his 3rd season he already seemed to be peaking. Since then his performance has declined to the point where his current team has difficulties trading his small 2 year deal for expiring contracts.

Ron Artest, 6th Overall Pick

Then a SF and now a SG, the 2000 Rookie Game MVP has mastered both positions over his career. He added some range and consistency to his jump shot and while it looks like he has reached the high of his development curve he is in for a nice career in the league. I don't think he will reach a level that takes him to the All Star Game, but he will be a nice 3rd option type player.

Andre Miller had the career most scouts envisioned him to have, not much of a scorer but a consistent playmaker and good rebounder for his position. He slowly improved all over the board and is now back in California after the Clippers shipped him so cheaply in a 2002 draft day trade for Flip Murray. He knows what to do on the basketball court which is why we will see him for many seasons and maybe more.

James Posey, 8th Overall Pick

Posey was an important bench player for the 2001 Grizzlies as they won the Championship, but that is all he can. His ball handling skills are these of a center and I would be surprised to see him in a regular starting gig ever again. ALong with Ginobili, Posey can be considered the big disappointment within this top ten of the 1999 SSBLv4 Draft.

His first 3 seasons didn't bear any excitement apart from being traded to the San Antonio Spurs as a rookie and winning a Champioship there as a backup. However he was bounced quickly and has yet to spend 2 consecutive seasons with the same team. However his curve is improving as he is breaking double digit scoring for the 2nd consecutive season. And someone liked this curve so much that they signed him to a maximum deal this offseason.

After showing alot of promise during his rookie campaign with the Raptors and Hawks, Terry has had the most up-and-down career on this list. Currently he hit rock bottom again but his game is good enough to climb out there and continue to have a steady career as a super sub or fringe starter. Don't write him off just yet.
