The Boston Celtics recently traded all star Paul Pierce and defensive stopper Ben Wallace, along with their starting PG Speedy Claxton in a move that will most certainly keep them out the playoffs for the 3rd consecutive year. The Celtics franchise, known for its winning ways, has had its fan base and media frustrated over its drawn out rebuilding process. It is understood however, that extreme measures must be taken to achieve the ultimate goal - an SSBL championship.
So what do Celtic fans have to look forward to? The 2002 SSBL Draft's #2 pick Caron Butler out of Connecticut. He has already developed a promising defensive game and shown an ability to hit the boards well from the SF position. He will need to work on his jump shot to develop into a 20ppg scorer, but with his potential and desire to improve he is not too far from it. Butler has big shoes to fill with Pierce's departure, this rookie season will be an excellent learning experience for him as he will most likely be the Celtic's #1 option on offense.
With the departure of Speedy Claxton the Celtics brought in Duke's star PG in Jay Williams. Williams has built up a strong all around game in college, and is coming into the league with a jump shot - something the Celtics didn't have in Claxton who was shooting under 40%. The sky is the limit for Williams, with hard work he has the ability to become a star within a few seasons. "The PG position is a need we have wanted to address for a long time, and Jay will have an opportunity to take the bull by the horns and lead this team as a starter." quoted GM run after Wednesday's blockbuster.
So, upon these recent developments, the average fan is still left wondering as to whether the Jay Williams - Caron Butler rookie tandem will develop into a force soon enough to lead the Celtics back to the promised land. Sophomore's Brendan Haywood and Deshawn Stevenson have shown flashes of promise, this upcoming training camp will tell the tale as to whether they will be able to provide the supporting cast the Celtics need.
Expect a horrible season from this young Celtics team, but after the recent trade the team has opened up lot of cap space to go with 2 good picks in next year's draft in which they will look to find a franchise player. Things will only be moving upward from this point on.
