2000 SSBL DRAFT ANALYSIS
Round 1:
1.
Atlanta Hawks - Elton Brand PF 6'8'' 260 21 B C- D+ B B- A
Brand was the consensus #1 pick in everyone's minds. They have lacked an inside presence ever since Mutumbo left town two years ago. Brand is a very skilled big man who can do it all: score in the post, hit the mid rang jumper, block shots, and hustle for rebounds.

Minnesota Timberwolves - Lamar Odom PF 6'10'' 220 19 B- C C+ C+ B- A
Odom is a very skilled combo player. It's hard to say what position he truly is. He can handle like a point guard but rebounds like a PF/C. He has a nice jump shot and can even score inside. The wolves didn't necessarily need another PF with KG on the team, and didn't necessarily need a SF with AK coming over next year, but Odom will compliment the KG/SJax duo very nicely with his all-around play. Although PG was arguably the position needed the most, the Twolves went with the BPA instead of drafting by need in a weak PG class, so this is a nice pick for Minnesota who got a lucky Auto pick.

Utah Jazz - Kenyon Martin PF 6'8'' 230 23 B+ D+ C- B C+ B
If Odom and Brand declared last year, KMart would probably be this year's no.1 pick. He is explosive and relentless around the rim. He is also a solid defender and good shot-blocker. His thunderous dunks make opposing defenders get out of the way. The Jazz seriously lacked offense and they get it in KMart. Also, Igor is coming back from Europe this year, hopefully he can lob some alley-oops to Martin a few times this year. Fid, stop asking me. Kmart was a good pick.

Vancouver Grizzlies - Richard Hamilton SG 6'7'' 185 22 C+ B C+ B- C- B
Rip finally makes his way into the Pros after four years at UConn. The Grizz already have a young core in O’Neal, Bibby, and Marion. So drafting the best SG in the class only made sense. Nice pick here for Vancouver.

Houston Rockets - Stromile Swift PF 6'8'' 215 21 B C- D B- C+ A
Swift could have been picked anywhere between 3 to 8. He's got a good all around game but needs to gain a little bit of weight to bang with the big boys down low in the Pros. Nonetheless, he's skilled enough to have been picked in the top 10. With Olajuwon and Pippen up there in age, the Rockets could have either picked Swift or someone like Miller or Turkoglu here, but with the amount of wings already on the roster, Swift looked like a good choice for insurance if something happens to Dream, knock on wood.

Golden State Warriors (from Cavaliers) - Erick Barkley PG 6'0'' 185 22 C+ B- C+ B D+ A
Warriors took a gamble and selected the "best" PG in a weak PG class. Barkley is a skilled PG from St. John's who can contribute in the right system. The Warriors passed on some talented wing players like Miller and Hedo, but selected either of the two might have created some playing time problems with Ginobili and Jamison at SG and SF respectively already on the roster. So mike went with Barkley who can learn allot from the veteran Sam Cassell. They also could have drafted a big man here, but drafting someone like Magloire here would have made sense too (even though they were able to draft him as well a few spots down. Solid pick in Barkley, but I just feel he went a little high given the talent still left.

Detroit Pistons - Mike Miller SF 6'8'' 215 20 C+ B+ C C+ C+ A
A team already loaded at SF (Rasheed, Mashburn, Weatherspoon) would probably not need another SF, but given Mike Miller's all-around game and potential, you cannot knock on Detroit taking the BPA. If they were to draft on need, they probably should have looked at a PG but with not too many PGs standing out, Miller is a decent pick. He will most likely get playing time at the SG position anyway. But given that they don't currently have any ball-handlers on the roster, maybe Turkoglu would have been a better choice here?

Seattle Supersonics - Hidayet Turkoglu SF 21 6'10'' 220 C+ B C+ C+ C A
If I were to have made a mock, I would have flip flopped Turkoglu and Miller given the current rosters. The Sonics were going to take either one, whomever the Pistons decided not to pick. Turkoglu appears to be more of a point-forward, who wants the ball in his hands. But you're not going to take the ball out of Payton's hands are you? Still, Hedo is not a bad pick here, and if anything, takes some pressure of Payton doing it all.
Grade: B+
9. Golden State Warriors - Jamaal Magloire C 22 6'11'' 243 B- D D+ B C+ B
Like I previously stated, the Warriors were also looking at Magloire at #6, but he fell into their laps at #9, so it worked out in the end. He can play PF for them if they are able to get Dampier back in FA.

Washington Wizards - Quentin Richardson SG 20 6'5'' 215 C B C- B- C B
The Wizards were left GMless as Luca has once again played the disappearing act that we're all accustomed to. Nonetheless, Washington is already sound up front, so adding a wing player like QRich is a nice pick up. He will bring 3pt shooting and defense, and will battle Malik Sealy for a starting spot.

Orlando Magic - Etan Thomas PF 22 6'9'' 247 C+ D D+ B+ C+ B
I'm not giving myself a grade here, but I really wanted to move up to maybe get into the top 5. Oh well, Etan should be a solid PF/C for a few years.

Los Angeles Clippers* (from Knicks) - Marko Jaric PG 22 6'7'' 195 C+ C+ B B- C- A
I sure hope the Clippers GM is aware that Jaric will be staying in Italy for 2 more years. In hindsight, this is not a bad pick since there is no rush to get a PG since Andre Miller was a nice pick for them last year. Owning Jaric's rights for the next few years helps them financially in the short term since they won't have to pay his salary until he comes to the U.S. The only other possibility for them would have been to take a raw talent, maybe like a wing player such as Miles or Bender, or even a polished shooter like Mo Pete, but Jaric isn't a bad pick...unless he busts and under-develops in Europe.

New Jersey Nets - Morris Peterson SG 23 6'6'' 210 C B C B- D+ B
The Nets have a bunch of average-skilled SGs, so they take another average-skilled SG in Mo Pete. He is a great shooter and a pretty good athlete, no doubt. But unless the Nets see a huge upside in Peterson over their current SGs (Harris, Gill, Strickland, Burrell), I'm not sure why they didn't look for a Big man to help out J-Will.

14. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Clippers) - Dalibor Bagaric C 20 7'1'' 250 B- D+ D- B- C+ A
The Odom pick makes this pick a not-so-bad one. The Twolves do need some guards though, among other needs. But Bagaric is a big body with some upside being only 20 years old. If he develops, the Twolves can be a very intriguing young team to watch in the next few years.

Charlotte Hornets - Eddie House PG 22 6'1'' 180 C A- C C+ D B
The defending Eastern Conference champs get some depth with a sniper shooter like Eddie House backing up Steve Francis and Ricky Davis. House isn't really a PG but won't really need to play PG that much given that Francis will be handling the rock. Charlotte now has some sick shooters in House, Peja, and Fox to help out Francis. At this point in the draft, it didn't appear that the Hornets would be drafting someone in hopes of acquiring an upgrade to any starter, but having an energy guy like House off the bench is a nice pick up

Phoenix Suns - Keyon Dooling PG 20 6'3'' 180 C+ B- C+ C+ C- B
Dooling is a good athlete but a so-so Point Guard. This pick is both insurance in case JKidd doesn't come back, as well as a move for the future so that Dooling can learn from Kidd if he does come back. Still, the Suns lack interior scoring, so maybe a Fizer or Moiso at this point wouldn't have been bad either, but Dooling was arguably the BPA at #16.

New York Knicks (from Mavericks via Magic) - Chris Mihm C 21 7'1'' 262 C+ C- D+ B- B+ C
The Knicks really liked what Mihm can do so they traded cash considerations and a future pick in order to acquire him. Mihm is pretty skilled and athletic. The Knicks were one of the worst rebounding teams last year, but Mihm will help get a ton of boards for them this year.

Indiana Pacers - DerMarr Johnson SG 20 6'9'' 200 C+ C+ C C+ C A
I don't quite understand this pick since the Pacers traded Steve Nash for Michael Redd in the offseason. I would have thought they were going to look for a PG to draft, but instead are hoping that Johnson is full of potential and can develop into a solid scorer in a few years. I don't hate this pick but I don't love it since they really needed a PG, but I have a strong feeling they are hoping a certain All-Star PG signs with them via Free Agency.

19. Washington Wizards (from Nuggets) - Speedy Claxton PG 22 5'11'' 180 C C+ B B D B
Claxton will backup Baron Davis. He will only see his minutes go up if something happens to BDiddy. Nothing really more to say about that.

Milwaukee Bucks - Jonathan Bender SF 19 7'0'' 195 C+ C+ D+ C+ C A
Bender, the guy everyone was scared of drafting, finally got picked up by the Bucks. The seven-footer will most likely see playing time at PF, but isn't prepared to bang with the SSBL big boys just yet since he is too skinny. He won't be playing ahead of KVH or GRobb in the depth chart, so will most likely be used off the bench to start out his career. Boom or bust with this type of player since it is uncertain how he will develop. But with his ability to shoot from the perimeter, maybe he can thrive in outside-focused Bucks

Boston Celtics* - Malik Allen PF 22 6'10'' 250 C+ C D B- C+ B
Allen was a safe pick for the Celtics at this point in the draft. He is a wide body who can knock down the mid-range jumper, who can also defend and grab some boards. I don't think he'll ever be a star, but he can contribute right off the bat.

Chicago Bulls - Darius Miles SF 19 6'8'' 200 C+ C+ C- C C A
The Bulls were a surprise team last year, thanks to the contributions of Reeves and Ostertag. Miles is another gamble pick, like Bender, since he is still raw and young. Maybe he can learn a thing or two from veteran Toni Kukoc, who is a long, tall wing player just like Miles.

Miami Heat - Atonis Fotsis SF 19 6'10'' 230 C B- D+ B- C A
The Heat had no problem selecting the youngster Fotsis from Greece. He will gain valuable experience from the veterans on the Miami Roster who are accustomed to winning already. At this point in the draft, getting an A potential guy is something contending teams don't mind at all

Philadelphia 76ers - Donnell Harvey PF 20 6'8'' 215 C+ D+ D C+ C+ A
With the uncertainty of Malone retiring or not, the Sixers went with Harvey, who is just 20 yrs old and seems to have a bright future. Can learn a thing or two from the Mailman.

With Brand already drafted, there was no need for this selection to be an instant-contributor. The Hawks are fine with Diawara staying in France to develop. Also saves them money this year and next year depending on how long Diawara stays. Not really sure who could have been picked here instead of YD that would have made more sense.

26. Utah Jazz (from Kings) - Olumide Oyedeji PF 19 6'9'' 240 C+ D+ D+ C+ B+ A
The Jazz love selecting foreigners (just check their roster). I think KMart was the only American ever selected by Utah. Well, the Jazz get a rebounding freak, who will get a majority of his minutes off the bench. I talked to the Jazz GM and he questions Rakocevic's development in Slovenia, so maybe drafting another PG here could have made sense too.

Portland Trail Blazers - Eduardo Najera PF 24 6'8'' 235 C+ D+ D+ B C+ B
The Blazers really need to re-sign their FAs. Adding Najera isn't exactly insurance for Camby, but will provide depth and energy if Camby and Finley do come back home.

Los Angeles Lakers - Marcus Fizer PF 22 6'8'' 265 B- C D+ B- C B
Fizer has been overlooked by many scouts. The Lakers almost expected Ewing to retire, but his return means bench time for Fizer, but he also gets a chance to play with and learn from some future Hall of Fame big men. Fizer is a solid PF, a little undersized (height-wise), but if the devotion to the game is there, and he takes full-advantage of learning from Ewing/Shaq, this may very well have been the steal of the draft.

29. Indiana Pacers (from Spurs) - Jerome Moiso - PF 22 6'10'' 230 B C- D- C C+ B
Rik Smits, Gary Trent, Antonio Davis, Travis Knight. All these names were the Pacers' big men last year, but with all of them Free Agents this summer, it is uncertain if all will return. Moiso is insurance in case any bail. He is a solid scorer and the Pacers hope he can develop and contribute.

All these names were the Pacers' big men last year, but with all of them Free Agents this summer, it is uncertain if all will return. Moiso is insurance in case any bail. He is a solid scorer and the Pacers hope he can develop and contribute.
