Wanted to try this in the old league before the reboot so...
Three foreign prospects in this year's wildcard are currently under contract with their respective teams in Europe and may not come over to the U.S. right away, although they are leaning toward leaving their names in the draft...
Andrei Kirilenko, the 18 yr old Russian sensation, is in the works of signing a 2-year contract extension with CSKA Moscow, with whom he is having an All-Star season for in only his first season playing for them. The 6'9" 200 lb Small Forward has expressed interest in heading to the U.S. in hopes of playing for the SSBL, but his future is still uncertain. His parents and agent are encouraging Andrei to stay in his home country a while and feel that he still needs to develop (or they just want their boy to pay their bills!). AK would be the youngest European player to ever be drafted in SSBL if he decides to declare this year.
Serbian point guard Igor Rakocevic is coming off a championship season with KK Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade). The 19-year-old was the club's floor general for the last two seasons and is under contract until 2000.
Greek big man Kostas Tsartsaris recently returned to Greece and signed a 1-year deal AO Near East after one season with U.M.F. Grindavik in Iceland. His future is uncertain as of now, but has expressed interest to declare for the SSBL draft, but also has some desire to remain in Greece. The 18 year old is still raw, but definitely a projet.
(what this all means...)
AK, Rakocevic, and Tsartsaris will most likely declare for the draft, but the team that drafts them will have to wait until their current contracts with their clubs expire. Kirilenko has 2 years left, Rakocevic has 1 yr left, and Tsartsaris is finishing up a one-year deal he signed last offseason with his new team. Assuming AK plays the entire two years with CSKA Moscow without opting-out or being bought out, Kirilenko's first year in the league will be the start of the 2001 season if you take the chance on drafting him this year. He will be placed on the roster THIS YEAR, but his 4-yr rookie contract will begin the year he comes over from Russia. It will be based on where he was drafted in 1999. His name will remain on your roster earning with a salary of $1 until he comes over from Russia. He will remain on IR and you won't be able to use him. Same with Rakocevic and Tsartsaris. This applies whether or not you draft them in the 1st or 2nd round (of course, you may 'free cut' the player if you select him in the 2nd round, shattering his dreams of playing in SSBL).
Spelling it out for you:
if he stays for Russia for 2 more years:
year 1: $1 - stays on IR
year 2: $1 - stays on IR
year 3: $x,xxx,xxx (year 1's actualy salary)
year 4: 2nd year salary
year 5: 3rd year salary
year 6: 4th year salary
not too confusing.
Other foreign prospects, such as Wang Zhizhi from China and Aleksandar Radojevic from Barton County Com.Col. will be declaring for the draft so this does not apply.
Happy drafting!!
